Play:

For the first time probably ever, I actually did play the games I said I was
going to...

Contact (DS)
I've just left Aegis. I really like this game, but it total surreal. Maybe
that's why I like it.

Kirby's Adventure (Wii)
Bought, played, loved, completed! ACE!

Castlevania (PS2)
See my post in the Castlevania thread. To recap: game is OK, but isn't really
Castlevania.

The Castlevania Adventure (GB)
Yes, GB. Of the original variety. And it's AWFUL. It's slow, creaking,
jerky, juddery, and too bloody hard. And the spikey bit == BADNESS. And no
subweapons. Hate it. But completed it anyway.

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (GB)
Much better! Started playing this last night, and it's everything TCA should
have been. It isn't much faster, but it controls a bit better, there's no
scrolly spikey bits (yet... but I'm right near the end now), the game is quite
a bit easier, and you have subweapons. And no jerking! And you can slide
down ropes! Actually enjoying this quite a lot.

Want:

More Castlevania Goodness. Portrait of Ruin will probably arrive today
though, so I'm not too worried. And you never know, we might get SOTN on the
360 this week...

Lots and lots of DS games. Such as:
Yoshi's Island
Kirby Squeak Squad
Thief Wario (or whatever the US version is called)
Diddy Kong Racing
Picross
Magical Starsign
Hotel Dusk
Touch Detective
Children of Mana
Final Fantasy III
Gunpey

Bin:
Well, my 360 at the moment. Both of them :)
I've not played it in weeks, and none of the current games interest me at all.
That'll change when some decent XBLA games are released (SOTN, Worms...)

It's all rather samey, but for some reason I just can't stop trying to
level everything up. Also, dying and not being given the option to just
go to the last save point is an annoyance.

> Touch Detective

I gave this a go, incredibly tedious point 'n' click game.

No, but at least when you die you keep all the items and things you've
collected since your last save, which, if you'd gone back to your last save,
you'd lose.

Hmm. A few people on here said otherwise (including James, I think). I had a

I was going to say why not just warp back to the ship when you're about
to die but that amounts to much the same thing.

Yeah, charming in places but very much a kiddies game. I completed it
100% though. Anyone want to buy it? I wish there were more decent
point and click games on the DS as it's pretty much made for it. I'd
probably play through the broken sword games again even though they miss
something without the voice acting.

Play:
Twilight Princess (Wii) Water temple done, Master Sword got. Now for
some relaxation, fishing and heart piece hunting before any more plot.

Well OK, it puts you in nice varied locations, but that's it. Gameplay
has been identical all the way so far, the different suits don't really
make /that/ much of a difference. Well, bar the cooking one, obviously.

Equipping the frying pan seems to make things fly up. Also, if it didn't
take so bloody long to cook something, it'd be even faster!

Usually, the only situations where you're likely to die you're near a
save point anyway. Not saying it's a totally bad thing, just the choice
would help.

ScummVM has a DS version now, which will give you access to most of
the Lucasarts back catalogue - Monkey Island and whatnot. May well be
worth buying a naughty-type memory card thing for.

Toe Jam & Earl (Wii)
I've played this before on the Dreamcast emulator but it was somewhat
broken and unplayable. The Wii version works fine and it's great to
finally play the game I first saw on GamesMaster back in the 90s. I was
playing it in co-op and it works nicely. The funky bassline is now
engrained in my head.

Wii Sports (Wii)
Great fun, but a shame that the experience is somewhat ruined by the
unrealistic shirt material dynamics in Wii Tennis.

Worms World Party (Dreamcast)
Every time I play this I struggle with the counter-intuitive front-end
GUI, but it's still a great game. I wish the more modern cartoony 2D
worms games hadn't neutered the cluster bomb of old. It used to be an
awesome weapon but it's considerably feebler these days.

WoW (IBM Compatible)
I'd like to have some harsh words with the designer who thought walking
back to your corpse would be a fun thing to do. It seems like I spend
half my time in the spirit world and it's ruddy tedious. They should
either make the journey automatic (since all I do is hold down forwards
and occasionally dodge a tree) so I can play on my DS whilst I wait or
supply some sort of pong minigame to make the time fly as you walk.

Lego Star Wars 2 (Xbox)
This is so charming.

Not a lot really. I think I spent some time on The Sims 2, but most of my
time was taken up job-hunting. I'm even considering doing a web-design
course in case a job opportunity arises in something I'm actually interested
in! At the moment, it seems to be wall-to-wall telesales opportunities, or
managerial roles with qualifications I'm sure these agencies are making up.
Sadly, I'm not interested in telesales of any description, and as for
managerial roles... I'm only 28! I'm not quite ready to surrender my
evenings, weekends and social life (or lack of) just yet...

In any case, all the other games I listed last Friday received no attention
at all.

Want:

Oblivion: Shivering Isles (PC): I want somewhere new to explore and seeing
as I finished the main story ages ago (which means no Oblivion gates to
explore), I really need something to do to maintain my interest.

The Sims 2: Seasons (PC): Because erm... It has snow, rain and stuff. Also,
it would be nice if the core game actually recognise the extra RAM in my PC
so that it didn't have to load objects and scenery every time I rotate the
camera. It only seems to use 1GB and refuses to go beyond that, despite my
PC having 3.5GB installed. Instead, it frustratingly uses virtual RAM which
slows things down.

Yes. Well, assuming they work - most other SCUMM games do so I see no reason
why not.

> I've never come
>across this before. What do I need to get it working? It sounds great!

You need a DS, a flash cart, and a copy of SCUMMVM for the DS. You need the
original games for the PC too. I have an R4, which is ace as you can use
MicroSD cards on it, and you don't need all the PassMe/GBA flash card/firmware
dodgyness associated with most cards.

http://www.cheapmod.net/item--R4DS--r4ds
http://scummvm.drunkencoders.com/

Since the R4 is a "single slot" card, you need to patch SCUMMVM to read the
files from the filesystem of the card, but that's easy enough to do. *I*
managed it :)

That's just Windows, isn't it? You can always experiment with not
having a swap file at all, which makes a huge positive difference for
me. Unless you regularly go off the top of that 3.5gig, of course.

Well, seeing as most Australians consider being 24+ as 'old' (speaking to a
majority of Australians aged 24+), I might not have much hassle passing
myself off as being 38! It was pretty weird talking to 24-year-old girls

I tried that a few months ago, and the game simply stopped loading any
objects or sound files it couldn't squeeze into that 1GB RAM. From what I
recall, even then it refused to use any more physical RAM.

Also, some games like Company of Heroes and Oblivion refuse to run on my PC
without Virtual Memory enabled. A real pain when neither game makes any real
use of the physical RAM available to them, yet seem to love filling up my
hard drive with temporary files!

One downside of the simgle-slot cards is that they need FAT support from the
assorted emulators and some of the home brew stuff. In time, program authors
will add this, but it's relatively new so not much works right now. There's a
decent Master System emulator, and SCUMMVM (and a pile of PD games too) so all
is not lost :)

Oh - and Moonshell (wot you can install on the card) plays MP3s and videos
too.

Gawd. That sort of OS service is _meant_ to be completely insulated
from the programs, but I suppose we are speaking about Windows...

Thanks for the warning - I'll bear that in mind.

Is this really the case? Americans also seem to think that life ends at 25

and irrelevancy. I always found it interesting to contrast that with my

Can't say much on Oblivion (other than I've had no issues) but I'm
certain the CoH demo refused to even install unless I set the pagefile
to be at least value x (I do have one, but keep it at a fairly minimal
set limit). I was surprised, to say the least.

I lie - CoH installs, but won't run unless you set a 768MB pagefile,
according to the popup message. Tried gradually increasing, and it let
me run it when I reached 750MB. I have 1GB RAM.

Also needed 1.5GB free space on the OS partition just to unpack the
demo, it gave no choice for temp. extract directory. Oh the fun I had.

As opposed to no support whatsoever, in other words the emulators don't

Yeah, it was pretty strange hearing it. Most Aussies (well, Aussie girls)
seem to just give up after a certain age seemingly convinced that they
should've been married and settled down by the age of 25. It's definitely
weird for me because I've got absolutely no plans to either be married or
settled until well into my thirties!

I can see which viewpoint would be the better one! If I had given up at 25,
I would probably have committed suicide by now. Admittedly, I did actually
go through a midlife crisis when I was 24, and a side effect of that was to
drag me back into computer/console gaming after an absence of nearly seven
years! I purchased a PS2 as a result of my midlife crisis!

> Time is short, but life is long. Go ahead and make plans.

So true! The only thing worrying me at the moment is that now I'm 28, I'm
starting to seriously run out of time in choosing a career...

When I played the demo, I didn't recall it demanding any pagefile space, but
it was the first thing it threw up at me when I tried installing the full
game.

Oblivion said absolutely nothing when I installed it, but when I tried
running it it simply threw me back to desktop with a message specifying a
minimum pagefile size.

What annoyed me is that neither game actually needed it. Even with Windoze
XP hogging resources, there was still over 3GB of physical memory available.

Paul.

I meant that it's part of the default package; when you put the R4DS

I just picked up whatever was latest off the R4 website at the time

It seems to be OK, but I don't know how that compares to the older version as
I didn't try it much, mainly because it crashes.

She had surgery on Sunday morning to re-attach it & was home again that

I suppose that's good-ish to hear, will she still have proper use of it,
or too early to know?

I'm not sure I will either, I can't stop thinking about it and I can
only assume that my imaginings don't come close to the real thing...

Nitrotracker (http://nitrotracker.tobw.net), which is something I'm keen
to try, states that it's compatible with R4DS.
They say that the nitrotracker works with R4DS: "Works (.nds, use DLDI)"
and from the DLDI page it sounds like all I have to do is download
dlditool.exe and r4tf.dldi from http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/,
run dlditool like this:
dlditool <name_of_patch> <rom_file>
which translates to
dlditool r4tf.dldi NitroTracker.nds
and then copy the NitroTracker files to the card, put the card in the
DS, turn on, and make with the funky music!

Does that sound about right?

Numlock is indeed good, as I discovered last night. Thanks for the tip.
Is there any way to invert the fact that I have to hold the mousebutton
down to look around? I'm getting RSI in my knuckle because I'm playing
in first-person with my RMB held down permanently.

Guh - no idea. I don't think so. You could always try progressquest

His original PWB implies it was somehow trapped in a heavy door at a
restaurant. It certainly sounds horrifying, my extreme commiserations
(is that the right word) to the Drunk, and here's hoping here a speedy
recovery and a return to full health. I really can't imagine how
traumatising it must be to see that.

Hmm, yes. Perhaps I don't want to know the way it happened then. If that's
what a door did to *fingers*, it is perhaps a small consolation that it was
fingers and nothing 'worse'.

My whole thumb became detached when I fell on a broken milk bottle when I
was around 7 years old. It was hanging on by the skin only.
As I remember it (it was nigh on 30 years ago -gulp!), 4 stitches fixed it
up. I still have a slight scar, but nothing noticeable. It _could_ be that
more was done besides 4 stitches, but not that I recall. The bone was
definitely snapped/ cut-through though.

An upper centimetre or two was cut off my brother's thumb when he caught it
in a door. He was around 10. To stop people screaming about it, my dad threw
the detached bit into the fire.
It was only afterwards in the hospital did he/we realise it was likely it
could've been re-attached.
That's back when men were men, more decisive and ignorant. ;)

Anyway, I don't mean to minimise your daughter's problem, but I know from
experience that full recoveries can be made after things like that.
Let us know!

That's very helpful, thanks. I'm going to buy and R4 and relive my
point-and-click youth!

Also, Nitrotracker (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) looks right up
my street. Is there anything else an R4-enabled DS is capable of that I
might not have heard about?

Thanks again.

Luckily there was a nurse in the restaurant who got her to hold her hand
up and wrapped a cloth napkin around it - I am not sure I would have had
the wherewithal to think of either of those things.

It plays pirated games, if that's your thang. It lets you view photos and
stuff too. And you can install some Linux distro on it.

I mainly use mine for emulators (Master System, mainly, at the moment).

Ditto, just had that feeling reading this. I've had the parent's
nightmare of a call from nursery saying my daughter had trapped her
finger's in the door, as I drove there thinking the worst I was relieved
to discover nothing too major, nothing broken or worse, just some bruising.

I hope she gets well soon and the finger is as good as new.

If being a parent has taught me anything, it's that time literally
stands still at those moments when 'shit' happens and you're standing
there witnessing, slightly too far removed to have any effect.

The one thing that time has taught me is that by and large any input I
could have made wouldn't have made it better - some things are simply
unavoidable - accidents DO happen.

Indeed. Must see if there's anywhere closer to home when I can try more
of this.

Definitely recommend trying it. Some bruising close to shoulder as a
result of the recoil is expected though - in my case it wasn't visible
and only noticed it when I had a much needed hot shower when i got back
home from the weekend and applied soap there.

They might have started earlier, but that was when I became aware of

All bloody well worth it though, was nice to do something fun that
