Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS) - It's very good and I'm now enjoying
the two-character mechanics more than I was initially, but I'm finding
the bosses deeply annoying. I've not found a fun one yet, but I've found
several whose difficulty is way out of line with the rest of the game
and I've had to make some cash and stock up on potions and tonics to get
past them.
Naked War (PC) - I won a game a few days ago! Yay! I've got a couple of
games on the go right now, but I'm winding down for Christmas. I'll
probably be firing off some more challenges in the new year.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (WII) - Got a good few hours in
yesterday, after about a week off. I made a fair amount of progress, but
got stuck on one boss for an hour or so before tripping over the
solution. I'm currently in the, I think, third dungeon and I am utterly,
completely, super-glue stuck. Still, RGB cable arrived this morning so
maybe next time I play I'll see something I missed.
Gunstar Heroes (WII) - I love this game. Since last playing it, though,
I seem to have lost any skills I once had, as I haven't managed to get
past the Pink Roader yet.
Alien Crush (WII) - Argh! It's a great pinball game and well worth a
download, but on my first ever go I got 1,750,000 points and since then
my best has been 1,112,000. I hate it when my first go at a game is my
best ever.
Bonk's Adventure (WII) - I've got to level 2-6, but that's my best. It's
really, really difficult. Or I'm rubbish. Or both. I'll keep trying,
though it may be years before I make any progress.
Super Mario 64 (WII) - Played quite a lot of this. I've lost my cap and
I can't get it back. It fell down into quicksand when I tried to steal
it back from the talons of the big bird. I'm sad. I love my cap. Also:
this game is much more difficult than it was back in '96 or '97 or
whenever it was I first played it.
WANT
Friday The 13th (360/DS) - I've recently been watching all the Friday
The 13th films and I've been wondering how they could be turned into a
game. (Yes, I know about the Spectrum version.) Should you be Jason, or
run from Jason, or what? Anyway, inspiration hit in bed last night after
The New Blood and my wife and I sketched out a plan for a game. You
prepare a camp/house (depending on level), populate it with teen
stereotypes and then trigger the arrival of Jason. You then control your
characters RTS-style in order to either get them killed as quickly as
possible, survive as long as possible, or disable Jason, thus winning
the level. Setting time records unlock extras, such as lovely fluffy
teddy-bear suit for Jason. Characters have "Jason attraction" circles
round them that increase when they indulge in drug taking, skinny
dipping or pre-marital sex. And stuff. It's The Sims, with a Sim
City-style disaster, with a movie-based level structure. Sort of. And if
the interface worked and it could be balanced properly it could be
brilliant. I want it very much.
BIN
Donkey Kong (WII) - Meh, I think. Either the NES version is a bit
rubbish or I just don't like Donkey Kong as much as I think I do. I know
it's missing a level, but the levels that are there don't feel as fun as
I remember. I still love the "jumping over barrels" sound, though.
Getting old and worse at games. Bah.

Xbox Live Gamertag: That Rev Chap
http://www.inverty.com
Anyway, I racked up about 12 hours on this over the weekend, which is
going some for me. I have to take breaks every hour or so, as I find the
controls a little uncomfortable (they're too small, for me).
It's excellent. Just got past the water temple, which fortunately,
though tricky, was nowhere near as fiendish as the OoT version - it was
mainly a matter of having a good look around all the time whenever I hit
a dead end - which was a couple of times, followed by some forehead
slapping ten or fifteen minutes later.
I love the size of this and the freeform exploration and the fact that
you're not being hectored into going to the next part of the 'mission'
all the time by Midna. It's nice having an explore around from time to
time and looking for secret caves and whathaveyou.
I do have some issues though. The bosses are stupidly easy. The controls
in themselves I don't have any issues with, but the button layouts for
accessing items, maps, applying stuff, is a little clunky. Also, when
there's so much bloody money kicking around, why are the purses so
sodding small?
Other than that, it's great, if a lot easier than I was expecting, but
then if it's as big as I hear, then that's no criticism.
Also played GW:RE (360) Skills lost - had three goes (the first time in
over a month) and managed about 1.2m on the second go.
Assault Heroes (360) If I've got the name right, that is. Fun, but I
don't think I'll be buying the full version.
Thanks. I may ask for one if I don't crack it on the next try. I'm just
wandering round at a complete loss and I've probably missed something
obvious.
> Assault Heroes (360) If I've got the name right, that is. Fun, but I
> don't think I'll be buying the full version.
Which reminds me of something that I should have put in my PLAY section...
Assault Heroes (360) - It's a shooter and it's clean and crisp and very
playable without being particularly inspiring. Not sure yet if I should
have paid 800 points for it, but I when I got to the end of the demo I
really wanted more.
Play - Zelda (GC) Brilliant game. Done 3 dungeons now and have clocked
around 26 hours. Better than Windwaker, the puzzles do not seem as hard as
windwaker ones were. Although a couple of times I have been stumped and had
to check walkthroughs. I don't think they have done enough to help people
when lost though. Some times it is not clear what you are supposed to do
next or where to go.
Want - Going on holiday on Weds, want Gatwick airport to run smoothly with
no problems.
Bin - Ideas of getting a Wii. I really do think it would become a novelty
that would just end up pissing me off.
Anything to do with tears+lake by any chance?

360, DS, PS2 and Saturn Games For Auction.
Phantasy Star Universe (PS2) - Finished story mode, and now I've hit a
brick wall levelling my normal character up. Looks like there's one more
thing they stole from Guild Wars and Final Fantasy XI, in that it's harder
to play past a certain level unless you're in a large group. Certain boss
enemies require that you target them in multiple ways that one character
just isn't enough for.
Settlers of Catan (N-gage) - I've given up on unlocking the additional
quests and AI opponents. I'm perfectly capable of winning a game, just not
while concentrating on the arbitrary quest goal (have the biggest army,
have the longest road, win whilst standing on head.) I like to keep my
strategy board game tactics nice and flexible.
Shenmue II (Xbox) - The 360 gets plugged in briefly to download the
backwards compatibility update. Of course, you always want to wait a few
days so that the usual Internet sources can report any problems. I'm one

me. And Mark Hamill does voices for it!
Majestic Twelve: Space Invaders IV (MAME) - In a fit of boredom on Sunday,
I was reading about the next year's new Smurfs cartoon and the Yoyodyne

terrestrial visits. The use of the Majestic Twelve code name in a Taito
game led me to fire up MAME on the Linux machine to try out Space Invaders

battles and a wonderful bonus round called 'Cattle Mutilation' with game
mechanics stolen from Defender (and little cows you have to safeguard.)

Wii Sports (Wii) - Specifically, bowling. Sheer brilliance - I've never
experienced anything that's such a good representation of the sport it is
trying to replicate. The only thing missing is the possibility of buggering
your aim (rather than just your spin) with an erratic swing. Otherwise, it's
just like being there. Current top score - 235.
Mii channel (Wii) - Fun to see other people's creations, and I've sent my
grumpy-mii to a few people. My mii parade has always been empty so far,
probably not helped by the fact that, of the people I've added from the
threads in here and ugvn, only a couple have added me back. :(
Zelda: TWilight Princess (Wii) - Played it for about an hour. I'll be
honest, I'm a little disappointed with the way it looks. Not just the
(relatively) low-res textures and poly-count, but some of the animation - it
just doesn't look right. Nevertheless, it plays well so far, which is what
really matters. Not really into the meat of the game yet, obviously, but
very much looking forward to progressing.
RS: Vegas (360) - A few online sessions, some more fun than others.
Definitely the best online shooter on the 360 so far, and likely to remain a
late-night staple for months.
PES6 (360) - A dozen or so more matches played, and I'm slowly starting to
pick up my atrocious win percentage. I'm now no longer rooted to the bottom
of my friends list rankings, anyway. :)
Assault Heroes (360) - Downloaded and had a very brief play. Seems fun - a
bit like a pretty version of Total Carnage, with vehicles. Not sure if I'll
stump up for the full version, but will probably replay the trial version
quite a bit.

I was the same. It just makes you hope that EA deliver with TW2007 when it
finally comes out. The Wii is designed for games that involve swinging at
the screen - a lumberjack sim would also be a good game.
That's weird. I thought bowling totally DID NOT reflect real life, by virtue
of me doing so much better on it than I do in real life. The only game I'd
say that did resemble reality would be Boxing. And that's crap.

Out of the five, this has by far been my favourite - probably since it's the
least "random". You can work out and judge a shot, and so it's so much more
rewarding when you do well.

I like that the nuances of swing are so well captured. I'm a reasonably

ones that are causing me problems on the Wii.

Oh, I don't dispute that it's fun to play, and that you have to judge your
shots carefully, but it's just that I was hoping to be able to hook/slice
and adjust the type of shot just from the swing. I'm still not quite sure
about what sort of motion the wiimote is capable of detecting accurately,
but my (perhaps slightly naive) hope is that it ought to be possible to make
a fairly realistic golf sim.

For it to work as well as you would like, you would have to have a a point
on the floor at which to aim -ie. to replicate the position of the ball.
Even if a game worked by placing the sensor bar on the floor (or a
ball-shaped 'sensorbar'), it still wouldn't work very well in practice,
since your 'club' is too short.
I think the 'strength-monitor' is about as much as a golf game _should_
opt-for with the swing. (I'm sure I could've worded that better, but you
know what I mean).

You're kidding, yes?
Maybe ;-)
The Australian "laid back" attitude doesn't exist. It's small-town
America on a large scale. It's greed, rudeness and
every-man-for-himself. People who become hard do VERY VERY well hear. I
could have a huge house with a pool in a couple of years, I reckon, but
I'd have to sacrifice what I consider the finer points of my personality
to do so.
I would hope so seeing as he's only been there about six weeks. I always
maintain that if you're going to travel half way around the world to
live somewhere, then you really shouldn't make any decisions until
you've been there at least a year.
Muhh :) First impressions are generally right. We're not going anywhere
yet - we're giving it a fair go; after all, we have invested rather a
lot[0] in getting here.
Right now, though, I'm Scottish, proud of it, and feeling like I'm
somewhere I don't belong.

Zelda: OoT. Trying to kill Ganon, you need to use Light Arrows. But,
I've failed once and so start out with no magic, and there's only enough
available in the pots at the bottom to fill it up once. And I've now
discovered that I'm having to have at least 5 goes with the light
arrows, which requires more magic than I can possibly have. So, I'm
going to have to exit the dungeon entirely and fill up first, great. I
thought I had the double magic meter too, but maybe I don't in hindsight.

Zelda: OoT. This one battle is getting overly irritating.

Be not afraid. Scots are not out of place anywhere. One of my best friends
is a displaced Scot working in Canada. Of all the people who have decided
to travel the world and seek their fortune, none have done so with more
grace and civility. Absent of the urge to conquer and the need to boast,
no race of man is more able to be distinctive, proud, and humble all at
the same time.
I say this as a American with absolutely no Scottish heritage, apart from
honorary clan membership earned by paying a bar tab. No one I know can
think to speak ill of Scotland or her people in any way.
-KKC, who still can't find his kilt.

I bet there's some Irish in you though!
Man, the stories some of my countrymen will tell to get out of paying
for drink... I bet he was from Aberdeen.
Stewart
As good as I am at double-talk, I'm completely serious about the Scots.
Isn't the head of Clan Ross living in Australia now? The Scots can go
places, assimilate comfortably and still be distinctively their own
people. The Scots have never had a need to parade through Boston or open a
whole city block of restaurants or lobby for a holiday to remind us who
they are.

>I bet there's some Irish in you though!
Not a bit. All my ancestors are Chinese, as far as I know. Although
there's suspicion that Italian and Arab explorers may have contributed to
my bloodline in undocumented ways. :)
-KKC, who knows exactly what you think of Americans with Irish pride. :)
That shows how successful Tartan Day has been so far then...
Stew
What did I just get done saying about Scotland? Give Choobs a day to feel
some ethnic pride, then get on with the obligatory business of
discrediting the American. :)
I don't honestly remember much about that evening. :) I have apparently
sworn an oath to defend Hendersons, McHenrys and Kendricks wherever I
encounter them. But it's not as if a messenger has come over the hill on a
horse with orders for me to take up a sword or anything...
-KKC, who wonders why Cisco manufactures so much equipment in Scotland.

See this is why I like the UK. We won't be rude to you as we clamber
over you to get to the top :-)
Being able to get free drinks is a source of pride to most Scots ;) The
best I found in Aus/NZ was acting offended when someone mistakes you for
a Pom.
Stewart
Maybe that's why they're quiet about being Scottish. Still, I like
Scotland and will definitely be retiring there if I stay in this
country, as their politicians are allowed to vote in our parliament
(hell, they pretty much run central government) and ours aren't allowed
to vote in theirs and they get 60% more taxpayers money from all of the
UK per capita head spent on them than anyone in england or Wales does.
> PLAY
Resident Evil 4 (PS2) - playing through it for a sixth time. It's too
soon after the last time I played, really, and aside from using the
PS2-specific "Special 2" costumes (which do affect gameplay slightly)
I wish I'd played the GC version instead.
GTA:SA (PS2) - mostly jumping off tall buildings without a parachute,
which is more fun than it should be. :-) It's a shame there's only one
building you can jump off into water though.
> WANT
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (PS2) - just to see the 40 new levels, and
the Master levels which I never got to see in SMB1. The control sounds
awful and might make it hard to go back to the GC games, but having
played those to death I'm not too bothered now. :-)
Donkey Kong 64 (N64) - I've never seen so many reviews saying "it's
really great, apart from all the staggeringly awful stuff". But I
still keep thinking I should get it.

Nothing.
-Rus.
You earned honorary clan membership by _paying_ a bar tab?
LOL.

Blatantly false Celtic propaganda. 'Absent of the urge to conquer'
- tosh. The reason Scotland never had an empire is because
they tried and failed miserably, generally because they didn't prepare
properly, or because the Spanish took a liking to the small areas where
the Scots were more successful.
As for 'the need to boast' - you've obviously never spoken to a Scot
about a sporting event which they recently beat the English at (which
is understandable, as it happens only very rarely).

World of Warcraft (PC) - And I shall be playing lots more, albeit in grainy
lo-fi chuggy laptop-o-vision. Being on holiday is fantastic, but I do feel like
I've double the computing power of Norfolk by bringing my laptop, XBox360 and
Wii home with me.
Wii Sports (Wii) - Alex brought his into work, and we both brought our
controllers in. Wii Boxing is the most genius multiplayer game ever. Although
I might be saying that because I win all the time.
Zelda (Wii) - It's just brilliant. Although I dislike the shake-the-nunchuck-to
-spin mechanic. But I can live with it. Because it's brilliant.
Driving to Norfolk (RL) - 5/10. Not the best journey ever. Not the worst.
XBox 360 games on my parents HDTV - Ohhhhhhhh, right. I understand the point
of HDTV now. It's so you can SEE THE FUCKING BALL in Tiger Woods. Seriously,
though, this is very pretty.
Mii Channel (Wii) - I am having puerile fun by making variations on Hitler and
sending them to people.
> WANT
Not much, right now. I'm enjoying being off work and doing fuck all except play
games. I might pick up Gears of War if I can find it in Norwich for less than
50quid. HMV by the Market haven't got any, and the other HMV is shut because
someone got stabbed there. I appear to have brought a little bit of Manchester
to Norfolk with me.
Norwich to be less like a generic city and more like it was 10-15 years ago.
The medievaly bits are gorgeous, but it's increasingly filled with nasty
generic chain shops and characterless malls.
To not have to go back to work again.
> BIN
Again, not much. Life at the moment is pretty sweet. Off work, playing games,
not having to pay for food, heating, electrickery, etc. Life doesn't really
get much better, except that my lovely girlfriend is the other end of the
country.

Gamertag: parm * BRING BACK BLUE SKY IN GAMES *
"Back when I was young, we had to travel back in time to put the tape in so
the game would load before we died."
Right, so people should spend £40 on a game, get stuck and not play it
again? Hmmm... I think I'd rather use a guide to get past the problem so
I can keep playing! I don't see guides as cheating, but even if it were,
does it matter so long as the person enjoys the game however they choose
to play it?

One thing that struck me with the training game is that it is not that
long ago that this would have been used as a technical demo to show off
the physics handling/graphical power of a console or PC.
Watch Heroes & Jericho - I'm not sure if I am even bothering going back
to Lost when the US restarts. It now feels too much like htey are just
making it up as they go along and padding the episodes.
I've managed to miss all of this - but I'm good at missing TV series -
but the general consensus is that it has jumped the shark. I love that
expression and I'm sitting here mentally rattling off a list of TV
series that have done it...
errr... not that I would ever use guides you understand..... I'm just
defending those who do.

That sounds a bit taxing to me. Why not just use this list instead?

Kulgan.
Yeah, that's the game I remember. Well thought-out and not beholden to any
of the movies in any way. It's a shame that there aren't more of these
8-bit and 16-bit titles known to the public well enough to justify an Xbox
Live or Virtual Console release. Now that I think about it, more likely
it's that they don't want to cut into current generation sales by offering
the best of the home computer era. Otherwise, we'd spend all our hours
playing Pirates! Gold and Mail Order Monsters.
-KKC, cursing the Intel monopoly.
