Sega Superstar Tennis (360) - Great fun, thankfully, and Superstar mode
has kept me very busy, but I can't help wishing it had more characters.
Where are the Virtua Fighter and Shenmue guys, for example?

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer (DS) - Bloody excellent roguelike.
I spend an awful lot of time rescuing my wife.

Pain (PS3) - Very odd, in that there's nothing much to it but it just
somehow eats time. Fun, but even £4.99 is maybe a little expensive.

WANT

GTA IV (360) - Now, please? Actually thinking about it, maybe...

GTA IV (PS3) - I think the 360's on the way out. The drive sticks shut
and it takes two or three times to open it every time and I'm seeing
some odd graphical glitches here and there, so the PS3 version of GTA
might be safer.

BIN

360 reliability issues. It's really fucking stupid that I'm even
considering GTA IV on the PS3 when the 360 has the better controller,
Achievements, more people online and the exclusive DLC.

Virtua Fighter 5 (360) - Spent some time with the quest mode, which is
incredibly fun. I see shades of Pocket Kingdom in this virtual metagame,
where you wander the streets of Tokyo looking for other 'players' to
fight. I wonder if the real VF5 arcade machines retain your individual
ranking and costume preferences (and synch them up via Internet.)

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus (PS2) - Cool. In the
casino, there are customization objects that allow you to turn your
private room into a giant bath, complete with faucets and giant communal
tubs and big hanging bamboo curtains.

Sonic Jam (SAT) - Finally found a copy of this for a reasonable price, as
most of the online shops want $60 or more for the thing (and never mind
what the brick-and-mortar stores charge.) The 3D Sonic World minigame is
very interesting from a historical perspective, and I wish Sega did more
of this transitional experimentation still. Virtua Fighter Kids, Daytona 2
in the arcades and Confidential Mission all fit into this sort of
try-and-see-what-happens category.

Wonderful game, innit? Although I question why it had to be a DS game,
given that it doesn't seem to use more than one screen at a a time for any
useful purpose. I suppose that the DS is the 'now' handheld and publishers
are afraid that putting out a GBA cart will hurt sales.

Not at all. Microsoft should be managing the issue by talking about a
redesign of the housing and putting out daily blog entries about chip
testing. Instead they're leaving us in a state of wary distrust, and
Sony's going to win the waiting game like they did the last time. This is
not how market competition is supposd to work.

Lost Odyssey (360) - Finished the main quest now, and if I didn't have
an bunch of things on my "to play" pile, I'd be tempted to start it
all over again. The second disk contains the only section of the game
that I'd consider to be grinding, but even then it's well put together
and is very much a part of the overall plot. 50 hours in total, and I
didn't do too much wandering off the beaten path at. Only gripe I'd
have is that the first time you go up against some of the harder
enemies, unless you have your tactics figured out, you can lost 45
minutes play time. It only happens a couple of times throughout the
game, but it's not in my list of most favoured game mechanics.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (360) - Surprisingly good. It feels like they've
streamlined the gameplay, as the levels all seem to flow a little
better and there're a lot less of the sill shootouts in big open
areas. Co-op is actually pretty fun, as the extra person doesn't in
anyway change the game, and it makes the game a little easier as you
respawn if your teammate lasts long enough. The free poker set from
gamestation is much better than I expected as well.

I've only played the sandboxing mode so far, but it seems like a
laugh. It's maybe missing the direction of the party games in
Flatout:UC, as all I seem to have to do so far is just hit stuff and
hurt myself as much as possible. Has that "just one more go" thing
going on though, which, like you say, can eat up some considerable

Nope. Two carts needed. It's not strictly multiplayer. If you die you
can request a rescue and you can send the request wirelessly or using a
password. The other player then has to reach the floor you died on and
find your corpse. They then send you a revival scroll, which allows you
to carry on from where you left off.

Having the map on the top screen and leaving the play area uncluttered

Yep. It does. And when you die you lose your inventory, get sent back
to the start and are a level one character again.

The only wrinkles are that characters you've talked to remember you -
allowing for little subplots that play out over multiple play throughs
- and there are storage areas where you can put items and pick them up
on another play through. This allows you to build up weapons over
multiple attempts - if you can get them back into storage before you
die, which is easier said than done.

I've only ever eaten monster meat in one of the puzzle levels I did,
where it was required. Otherwise it's very rare and I've only seen
low-level monster meat, so if I get it I throw at tough monsters to
power them down.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (PSP) - I have played all three of
the 'proper' 3D GTA games fairly extensively. I thought they were all
rubbish. But that article in this month's Edge got me drooling a bit,
so I picked this up cheap and have spent the last day playing it and I
can't put it down. I'm not sure why because it's crap. The camera is
awful, the targetting system is rubbish, the AI is laughable (on
numerous occasions my partners have gotten stuck onto a wall just
running into nothing and I've had to drive into them to get them back
on track) and the whole thing is just one fetch quest after another.
And yet despite that, and despite the fact that I'm sticking fairly
rigidly to the story, I'm loving it.

Sega Superstars Tennis (360) - It's fun enough but a big
disappointment. I'm confused that the reviews are all criticising it
for being too easy. I consider myself a pretty good VT3 player (up
until the final match against king I did the entire career without ever
losing a game), and this seems much harder. Yes the controls are
simplified, but some of those minigames (I'm looking at you, Dodge Ball

Sonic The Hedgehog (360) - The Sonic Unleashed trailer and screens made

I tried this for 5 minutes on a demo pod on Saturday and it seemed a bit
naff. The character animation was very stilted (as compared with, say,
Virtua Tennis 2 on the DC). I wasn't able to summon anything beyond
moving, hitting, and lobbing, although that could be my naivite at fault.

I have, albeit briefly. Going from about equal time with both games, I
would say Shiren is superior. It helps that Shiren the Wanderer was
developed by Chunsoft, who have been making roguelikes in the form of the
Fushugi No Dungeon games for about 15 years. By comparison, Ninja Studios
has only Izuna to its credit if you don't also count the mobile phone
version of the same game.

That being said, Izuna has some excellent graphics and a nicely
entertaining translation. I wouldn't count it out completely, but if it
comes down to a choice then I would say go with Shiren.

Everytime I play a rougelike I want to get into it, but they usually end
up feeling me cold-ish. Mystery Dungeon reminds me a lot of Izuna on DS
(which you don't hear much about), and Dragon Crystal on Game Gear which
I really enjoyed. I think I just prefer something with the relative

UT3 (PS3) Spent a couple of hours on Sunday playing this with DrG and a

enjoyable stuff though it really needs more than three of us to do it
justice.

COD4 (360) Played this online only for about a couple of hours -
starting to get to grips with some of the maps and modes - made some
classic newbie errors on S&D in Hardcore mode (i.e. shooting team mates
by accident). It's still excellent fun for me - I really like the team

fact that it doesn't take 300 rounds to kill opponents - it evens up the
skill base a little, I find.

Ratchet & Clank (PS3) Resurrected my save from January (half way into
second play through) a few days ago and went on a treasure hunt (mainly

challenge mode, but I have too many other games to get on with...

I think they're going to fuck this up spectacularly if they don't
resolve these issues sooner rather than later. Even though mine seems to
be working fine, it can be erratic and funnily enough I feel no security
in the knowledge that it's more when rather than if. I want a rock solid
quiet 360, please.

Does this mean you haven't heard of Izuna either, which came out over a
year ago? Amusingly, it's listed on Play.com as "a new variation of the
RPG genre".

Actually, given that I have the source code, I can categorically say
that there's more chance of a closed source app like Money doing that -
you've no idea WHAT is going on in the internals of MS stuff.

Are you having a problem where Vista won't allow openvpn to add routes?
If so, there's a fix in the beta build of OpenVPN. Isn't it nice of
microsoft to tell you what you are and aren't allowed to do with your
own puter.

Hitman: Blood Money (PS2) - finished on Normal (which weirdly isn't,
it defaults to Rookie for some reason), admittedly with quite poor
ratings again (better ones than I managed on Contracts, but I think
it's just being more generous with them). That was a great little bit
at the end, I have to admit I didn't twig what was going on at first
despite the fairly heavy hints both at the time and much earlier in
the game. :-) Anyway, overall I think it's a better game than
Contracts with much more interesting and varied locations - almost
every level is at least as good as the best level was in the previous
game. But that crazy disc-hammering it does (at least on the PS2
version) can be hard to put up with, and most of the changes they made
to the controls were a bit thoughtless and gratuitous (e.g. swapping
the meanings of L1 and L2, and changing what most of the face buttons
do). There's also one level where the sound effects drop out halfway
through; apparently this is a problem it has on that level with all
slimline PS2s, which is pretty stupid for a game dating from 2006.

Hitman 2 (PS2) - finished with rubbish ratings. I'm glad that I got
around to this one last, as if I'd played it first I really doubt I
ever would have tried the others. It's all just a bit too crude and
repetitive and tedious, with too many missions really not feeling like
"hits" somehow, and I probably shouldn't have bothered finishing it to
be honest. Though I have to say, I liked what they did with the target
in the penultimate level. :-)

> WANT

Gran Turismo 4 (PS2) to arrive. I didn't really get on with GT1 or GT3
(and never even bothered with GT2) so I don't exactly have high hopes
for this, but I thought I might as well give it a chance.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response (PS2), possibly. There was a demo for this
on the HBM disc, and while it's Yet Another FPS it doesn't look too
bad.

> BIN

The odd way HBM deals with replaying levels. Even after you've
finished the game, it seems to give you very little money when you
redo a level - maybe a fifth of what it says you made - and it doesn't
give you the option to reduce your notoriety (though this may just
mean the notoriety stuff is disabled for replays, it's not terribly
clear). And it really should show your best ratings somewhere.

Saving on PS2 HBM. You get three save slots per profile, which are
basically just checkpoints as (for no obvious reason) you lose the
saves if you exit in any way. In principle I'm not too bothered by
that, but on the PS2 it's frustrating knowing that while a profile
takes up nearly a third of a memory card, probably only 1% of that is
being used for anything at all when you're not playing the game.

I was really enjoying it, though. It went a long way towards capturing the
gung-ho space marine feeling of Quake 2.

I hope you're not thinking I'm playing a console version of the game. I imagine
it wouldn't work well with a pad.

Is that the one the rev was on about some time back (Zangband TK)? If
so then yes, and I didn't really like it. Mystery Dungeon is good
though, it's got so many little things just right - the rescuing aspect
standing out in particular. I'd say if it's the sort of thing you're
after, both this and Izuna are different enough to warrant a purchase
but I don't know if you'd find them a little too simple or not.

As an interesting aside, I ejected a game out of my PS3 last night as I
was tidying boxes away and forgot to turn it off. I didn't notice this
until half an hour ago, that's how quiet it is and how quiet I want the
360. Unfortunately, the PS3 still doesn't have enough *great* games and
the PSN and XMB are just irredeemably crap compared to the 360. Hell, I
spent three hours playing UT3 on the PS3 on Sunday, while using the
in-game lobby chat function of Forza 2 on the 360 so that we could talk
- that's how broken it is.

The problem isn't that it's crap with a pad, the problem is that it's
crap however you play.

As far as I'm aware, if you replay a previously completed level on HBM
it grants you the difference between your previous money earned and what
you earned on the replay: so if you got $20,000 the first time and
$25,000 the second you'll only actually get $5,000 the second time.

However, it doesn't enforce this for anything except the first replay:
if you reload a save from before you finished the level, you get get
$5,000 again. And again. And again.
