Hi folks,

The time has come to buy a new TV for gaming, Ideally I need something
that I can flip into vertical mode (ie turn the TV on it's side) for
all those vertical scrolling shmups that are about recently.

I like the idea of a Hantarex (www.hantarex.co.uk) EQ/3 28", but that
will set me back £590+VAT. I would rather spend £400 inc VAT.
Hantarex also aren't that easy to buy from (oh no sir, you can't buy
from us direct... here's one of our suppliers who will never return
your calls).

So my pre-requisutes:
At least 1x RGB socket on the rear
Be able to take s-video (either over scart or through 'normal' s-video
connector.
Must work on it's side
Must be able to balance on it's side without too much hassle of
sticking books underneath.
Available in the UK.
Must be 4:3 (tried flipping the 28" WS Wega - not fun)
Screen size can be anything from 20" - 28"

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated - or even 'stay away'
froms would be great.

Thanks folks!

I don't know if you can do this with any standard TVs - it buggers the
tube/phospor thing up and make the colours go all strange (I shit my pants
when it happened on my TV...)

Recently? Only one I can think of is Ikaruga, what else is there?

If you know how to degauss your telly you should be fine playing sideways.
My old 4:3 telly automagically degausses itself if you unplug it from the
mains for a few minutes then plug it back in.

I used to have a 14" philips which loved to be turned on its side - damn
good telly, that, lovely RGB picture, too.

Anyhow, I've given up with 4:3 tellies - widescreen is here, baby. Death
to all developers that are too shit to include widescreen modes :-)

If you wait a few minutes for the tube to settle down before turning it back
on its usually ok.

Personally i thought ikaruga didnt look as nice in vertical mode as opposed
to horiz.

That is one of the reasons why I have stuck with a 21" TV - hardly any games
support widescreen, and there is no 'perfect' soloution to getting a 4:3
picture on a 16:9 screen.

So if I have my TV turned off, tilt it on it's side and THEN turn it on...
it should be ok...?

that is what i was told , give it time after you turn it off , turn over
leave a few mins and then switch on. Though i suppose it might be different
on some tvs , but all mine were ok. But then i never turned over a 32" WS
and never will.

Nice, it worked for my TV!
Ikaruga played and looked better like that as well...

DoDonPachi DOJ, er.... there are more... I just can't think.
Actually, come to think of it most of them are Saturn games I've
picked up from ebay and the like.

I had a 14" WEGA that was great for flipping, maybe I'll look for a
21" of those.

But when games do support Widescreen, they look blaaaady laaavely. Dead
or Alive: Jugs, Brunout 2, Super Monkey Ball 2 etc. all look 40,000 times
more ace in Widescreen mode than 4:3 mode.

F-Zero GX in Widescreen will be the most sexual thing in history since the
invention of sex.

There's of course the new Dodonpachi game which you've already mentioned,
Psyvariar is soon to get a PAL release (promising to be fully intact with a
60hz option and at the bargain price of 20 quid!!!!!) and Shikigami no Shiro
has been around for a year or so, with a sequal in the works. There's also
XIII Stag which I've hard very little about so far.

If you're getting a cheapish 21" 4:3 TV for gaming, I recommend
looking at the Toshiba 21S04. It's got a good picture, RGB SCART, 60Hz
support etc etc, but it also has a useful zoom function. This is
supposedly there to stretch widescreen movies to fill the screen, but
it works brilliantly at displaying bordered PAL conversions without
the borders!

consoles, though you should have one:o)

no s-video iirc

I have XII Stag - it's OK, although I wasn;t that fussed with it. Not
worth the $60 import really.
Shiki is good, haven;t played that in tate mode yet. I though
Psyvariar was boring to begin with - but that was because I just
didn;t 'get' the game. Now I love it. Haven;t played that in Tate
yet either. Hence the need for a whizz bang TV!

I think it will take an S-video signal, but through a SCART adapter
(RGB into SCART 1, S-video into SCART 2). You're right though, RGB's
the one to go for.

Other than leaving it in 4:3..., I'm not into playing games in "Fat Head"
mode (god I hate seeing people watch telly with fat head as if its
normal,JUST WATCH IT AS IT'S INTENDED 4:3!!), or stretching the image so
it's either chopped off, or tricking it so it looks like a goldfish bowl.

I think (rough maths here) a 28" widescreen telly when displaying a regular
4:3 image (without stretching and all that pants) is the equivalent to a 21"
TV, but when any widescreen stuff is displayed you get the extra viewing
area for DVD's games which support 16:9 etc. But the price difference
between 28" widescreen telly and 21" telly can be large I guess.

The alternative is to go for a cheaper BIGGER screen 4:3 TV, so that when it
shows 16:9 images (letterbox equivalent) it shows them at the same size as a
28"widescreen telly, plus you get the bonus of a HUGE 4:3 screen when
needed. Most likely even that can be got cheaper than a 28" widescreen
telly.

Remember the screen size of a telly is measured diagonal to diagonal, thats
why widescreen tellys can have huge sizes, but in reality if you have the
storage space a bigger 4:3 telly is usually more cost effective.

*ducks*

Last time I checked Psyvariar was reduced to £12, but it has been
seriously delayed. Some people aren't even convinced it won't be
canned.

Yeah, I know they keep putting it back. If it's not out soon, I might just
pick up the Japanese version, but I'm sure 12 quid would be an absolute
bargain!
