No fapping for me until it's confirmed for an English language release.

And do I really want it to take over my life again?

I had the strangest thought in my head that Leonard Nimoy might not be
available to reprise his role as the narrator, and perhaps that job would
be better filled by Christopher Lloyd. I'd appreciate it if somebody can
diagnose exactly what it is I ate to produce that kind of thinking. :)

The National Football League and the Player's Association floated the idea
of selling exclusive rights to player likenesses and names, as well as
team logos and monikers to a single developer. In effect, they wanted to
profit from a monopoly on NFL-licensed games, and EA was able to outbid
Sega and all other parties. Putting aside any prejudice I have against EA
to begin with, the idea that I can't select a preferred NFL game from
several competing choices is very unpleasant to me. I feel that the NFL
let me down as a fan and as a customer, so for the moment I'm neither.

It's actually a strangely liberating experience. I'm spending Sundays
getting to know other video games that might otherwise have gathered more
dust on my shelves. I take a quick look at scores sometime during the
week, but it's not something on which I spend any significant thought.
This also means that those million-dollar advertisements never get close
to me. I'm not saying that my little protest is going to have any impact,
but it's worth noting that if it weren't for Sega and Visual Concepts I
would never have been an American football fan to begin with. If I'm gonna
dance, it'll be with the girl I brought.

-KKC, who can't think of a graceful way to bring this back on topic. :)

Well, I'm not sure what's the worse state of affairs - that EA have been
allowed to do this at the expense of everyone else, or that people care
so much these days about having the correct players, teams, likenesses.

It's been a similar(ish) case with the FIFA games vs. PES, in that
Konami have only secured some rights here and there so, even as far as
PES4, there's been a bloody load players with made up names. However,
likenesses are still retained regardless. Would I play PES without the
proper teams and player names? Well, I'd like to think I would, but if
so then why did I go to the effort of modding my (PC) version with up to
date teams and players and so on?

Is it getting beyond the point now where half of the fun is in the
realism of controlling "your" team? Sometimes I think that so much goes
on automatically in sports games you're barely even deciding what goes
on, the players themselves can do more than can ever be assigned to the
buttons on a joypad so half the time you're doing little more than
guiding a player around and occasionally whacking a button. In NFL
games, you're not passing to your wide recievers, you just hit whichever
button is assigned to which player, you don't even have to aim the ball
in the right direction if you don't want to. I barely feel like I'm in
control of where a shot in PES actually goes for last couple of versions
I've played.

What happened to the days of having a game that was just fun, and the
onscreen players actually did what you wanted? I don't know much about
NHL so the early Megadrive days were just plain fun to play, I felt that
if I scored it was because of how I was playing. Stuff like NHL2003 has
all the teams, all the players and so on but seems to have stripped out
all the fun, I still don't know who the players are but it's like
they're banking on that to make people enjoy the game, at the expense of
the game itself. Things get so realistic that they become boring as a
result, is what I think I'm trying to say.....

I'm sure you subjects of the crown have some colloquiallsism which is the
equivalent of 'Monday Morning Quaterback.' That's by way of saying that
the drive behind the realism (player names and faces, and so forth) is
that everybody thinks he could have done it better, or at last done it
differently. This may not be objectively fun from a gameplay standpoint,
but enough people find it entertaining to make it an important focus of
sports games in general.

It is possible to have it both ways. The original NFL2K was a masterstroke
in my opinion, and had equal parts realism and gaming value. Later
iterations of the series added many bells and whistles, such as RPG-like
artifact collection and celebrity AI opponents, but these features were
easily ignored. But I find your observation interesting in that it could
easily be applied to non-sports video games as well... There's so much
work that goes into historical accuracy and lighting and shading and flesh
tones, but frequently nobody stops to see if the final product ends up
being any fun.

I'm not losing out. It's a good time to be a gamer, in that we're
innundated with a large amount of quality product. There's some turkeys in
there too, but gamers aren't left wanting in general. Game companies like
Electronic Arts will lose out in the long run though, as more consumers
make the kinds of decisions that I made and end up being more selective
with purchases. It's not a wonder that they resort to exclusive licenses
and other cheap market manipulation.

-KKC, who normally goes through his posts to change all the appropriate
words to their UK spelling but doesn't feel motivated to do so today.

I'll reply to this tomorrow, but after I saw this bit I decided it was
time to give NFL2k1 a play, I barely tried it out after I bought it ages
ago :)
