Looks like Virtua Tennis may be a saving grace for Dreamcast in the
pre-Christmas period. The stellar tennis game managed an excellent 9,598 sales
in its second week at retail, up 999 percent on the previous week. The
top-selling PlayStation game was Codemasters highly accomplished TOCA World
Touring Cars, with 8,404 units sold.
Bringing up the rear in the Dreamcast charts was Hidden and Dangerous with just
over 2,700 copies. As per usual, Pokémon outsold the lot, right? Wrong. Pokémon
Yellow managed just over 8,400 units, just pipping TOCA to second place.

Sega will be singing from the rooftops. With every chance of Quake 3 Arena,
currently scheduled for release on November 10 on Dreamcast, repeating the
performance, all the signs are of a good Christmas for the company.

The reason the sales jumped 999 percent is that it was released early, but some

Wow, that's great news (assuming it's true) - I saw the effect Vtennis
was having in Bluewater on saturday - drawing huge crowds, and there
were people actually buying consoles over the counter.

To be honest, Im not surprised, the game is just bloody brilliant.

I witnessed an interesting event in Currys on sunday as well; the salesman
effectively persuaded a middled aged woman (obviously not totally knowing
what she was doing) away from pre-ordering a PS2 for Xmas, and got her
to buy a DC pack for the same price with a few games. He was using good
reasoned arguments, which made me immediately suspicious (ie more games,
no wait, hard to tell the diff anyway) - turns out Currys were actually
out of PS2 allocation, hence his rather surprising attitude.

It's great to see a top game like Virtua Tennis get to No.1, but let's get
some perspective here. It's sold 10,000 copies in the first week - really
big hits, like GT2 or Pokemon Yellow, sold around 120,000 in their first
week. Virtua Tennis went to No.1 because it's summer, and game sales are
terrible, and DC owners are starved of pretty much anything else decent to
buy. It's a long, long way short of anything to suggest Sega will have a
"good Christmas".

Yeah good point. I don't think it's too small a thing that VT's done
so well - sure it hasn't won the premiership, but it has at least got
into the damn thing. Would anyone have predicted that it would sell
so well a week ago?

Except the front cover of practically every DC and multi-format mag in the
universe, of course, accompanied by the most glowing reviews imaginable. And
as for the number of DC owners, Crazy Taxi did four times as many copies as
VT when there were a lot fewer DC owners than there are now.

Settle down, everyone. I think V Tennis is a fabulous game, and I'm
delighted to see it at the top of the charts. But please try to stop reading
things into it that just aren't there.

But it does suggest it will have a better Christmas than expected. Mums and
Dads going into the likes of Bluewater this Christmas looking for little
Johnnies pressie (why are they always called Johnny?), may just be talked
into buying DCs by assistants who have nothing else to sell them.

I'm sure a pack containing, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, RE:CV and DOA2 (or
Rayman 2) will keep the little blighters (what do I sound like?) quiet over
Christmas.

That would be a _damn_ good package - if they could price that at 200-250,
it'd be one helluva good christmas pressy for anyone.

I wonder how many people who are waiting for the ps2 have actually played
some of the killer aps on the DC?

my first impression of the dc wasnt much (saw sega rally)

anyways recently i say some of the newer stuff & was impressed. I now own
a DC.

the main problem with the DC imo is people dont know how good it is.

came into work & a lass in my team was telling me she had just got into TR
4 on the psx. when i told her a TR (tombraider) game was out on the
dreamcast she was
like, yeah but it cant be as good as on the psx can it (I swear
this is true)

the thing is as long as Sony keep advertising the psx, & sega keep not
advertising the DC, Joe average is going to think the psx is still the
best game console & wait for the ps2.

Sega need to find some money to wang together some big adverts as in the
middle of & Star Trek, & football matches & the Grand prix & even stuff
like & Enders & Corrie.

they need to say, look we have internet access & soon you will be able to
play quake 3 against PC owners & have a blatent big screen shot of it,

A lot of people dont even know you CANT go online with a ps2 yet (for
another year at least) and that you dont get a modem with it.

This Christmas is their last chance to make real ground on sony, & imo the
hardware IS up to it, but the marketing has got to be right, & + they MUST
hurry up & get real internet gameing working properly.... if Q3 slips till
after christmas it will be a major blow.

I would`ve never guessed how good it was without [.]TV Gameover and a
friend had one!

Apart from that.. fuck all was telling me to buy one..

Maybe the Saturn had fucked it up for them!?

Also.. What put me off before buying one was that the games all seemed
too arcadey and suffered from lack off depth.. That is not the case
though..

I think this is a point that they need to put across..

I`ve had that before..

And i`ve also had someone compare ingame graphics on a DC To FMV On a
PSX, i gave up instantly.. there`s no pleasing some ppl!

The BBC Advertising DC In Eastenders??!

They have no advertising on BBC!?

>they need to say, look we have internet access & soon you will be able to

That will lift sales!! When i got Half-Life on my DC Online i will be
dragging ppl from outside into my house to watch!

(Just like i did with the PC:)

Broadband in Rural areas is gonna be shitloads away as yet!

Q3`s not the answer IMO..

The single player games that are shedule for the next few months are
gonna blow the games public away..

If i didn`t have a DC And stood in front of Ferrari 355 i think i
would smash n grab the nearest Dreamcast!

Can`t wait!

Sorry, I haven't actually seen this episode, but there was a thread about it
on a.g.v.sega-dreamcast a month or so ago - prolly quite a new episode then.
