If you use more than one tv please reply twice rather than fill in the
same answers mentioning both sets together. The more replies we get
the more we will know about the different brands. Obviously if your
not interested fair enough but you don't see many tv reviews directly
related to gaming use so I think it will be helpful.

1x RGB/Composite SCART, 1x composite/audio in at front.

Excellent picture quality in 50hz, awful flickering and distortion in
60hz, screen grows and shrinks when there are large white areas (bad
power supply).

Discoloured in 60hz.

Crap performance in 60hz mode. Only one SCART socket, no S-video at all.

Jaguar, SNES, Mega Drive, Master System, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, N64,
Playstation, PS2, Dreamcast, all connected with RGB SCART except the N64
which was with composite and the Master System with RF.
>14. Do you run an import console and if so does it frame the 60hz

Flickering and yellowness in 60hz mode. Dies down after a while.

Works fine with DVD but only used RGB so Macrovision wouldn't kick in.

It's silver, and it has an utterly useless contrast adjust feature. You
can also adjust the colour levels of an RGB source which is not a good
thing.

Its nicam with two front facing speakers. Good quality output and also
has a fake virtual surround mode. No complaints at all as its nice
dynamic sound.
>6. AV Inputs (how many scarts, front inputs etc)?
>
One full feature scart around the back and front AV sockets but no
s-video on either the front or through the scart its purely composite
and RGB only. 3.5mm headphone socket.
>7. General view of picture quality and whats good and bad?
>
>
Picture quality is generally very good with excellent colour and
resolution.
>8. Is the colour clean across the image or have you got
>discolourisation?
>
>
If I leave it on standby most of the time its possible for colour
inpurity to build up on screen lets say after 8 weeks but switching it
off allowing to cool and then switching back with the actual on/off
switch always cures it. If I'm watching an image with a black borders
on the edge of the border top left you almost always see a slight red
bleed running along the top left a little way towards the centre. Its
very minor but there.
>9. Is the convergence good to you get a left shift on RGB scart images
>and is this correctable via the menu?
>
>
Convergence is excellent and teletext is super square. Sadly the set
does have the left shift on rgb and there is no way to compensate on
the tv menus.
>10. How old is the set?
>
About 3 years old I think.
>11. How much did you pay for the set?
>
I paid £240 at auction and bought it secondhand with little use. It
came as new but no manual and wrong box. At the time the full retail
price was about £540 with the real shop price being from £400 to £480.
>12. Has it been reliable or are there any issues you'd like to mention

No reliability issues only minor annoyance is sometimes theres like a
transparent grain on the menus which is very slight and totally
insignificant but I just don't know why its there.
>13. Which consoles have you used on the set and how were they

I've used basically all consoles with both composite and rgb
connections with great results apart from the minor left shift on rgb
with some of them but not all!
>14. Do you run an import console and if so does it frame the 60hz

It runs brilliantly with 60hz but can not take a native ntsc signal
via a composite connection that will just be b/w.
>15. Does the set work well with dvds or is it macrovision sensitive

Its not macrovision sensitive and works well with dvds.
>16. Any unique features?

Being a combi its also a full feature 6 head nicam video all built in.
You also have an extend option so games with minor top and bottom
black borders can run as if they are full screen games with no
borders. A very useful feature. Its also totally secam compatible but
who cares!

Widescreen

Prologic (though all my sound goes through my Digitheatre rather than
the TV)
>6. AV Inputs (how many scarts, front inputs etc)?
2 Scarts (1 RGB), composite & s-video front inputs. Audio L+R out.
>7. General view of picture quality and whats good and bad?
Pretty damn excellent, though needs some careful balancing of
brightness and contrast to avoid nasty white 'streaks' from white
objects against black backgrounds.
>8. Is the colour clean across the image or have you got
>discolourisation?
Colour is excellent.
>9. Is the convergence good to you get a left shift on RGB scart images
>and is this correctable via the menu?
Yes I get a left shift, and no there's no menu correction (at least
that I know of - there may be something in the service engineer menu
which I don't know how to access). My GC allows me to correct it
though :-)
>10. How old is the set?
Ooh, about 5 years. Maybe 6 (not sure exactly, I bought it 2nd hand
from a mate).
>11. How much did you pay for the set?
£450
>12. Has it been reliable or are there any issues you'd like to mention
>like LOPT buzz or any other slightly annoying noises?
Faultless so far.
>13. Which consoles have you used on the set and how were they

DC (RGB), N64 (composite scart), GC (RGB), Xbox (RGB), PS2 (composite)
>14. Do you run an import console and if so does it frame the 60hz
>signal properly or are there picture problems?
My GC is imported. It handles the 60hz signal perfectly (ie no picture
roll) but doesn't understand NTSC, so I have to use a custom RGB
cable. Which gives me an astonishing picture :-)
>15. Does the set work well with dvds or is it macrovision sensitive
>with varying brightness and screen judder with intense picture
>brightness variations?
No problems with my Lecson and about 100 DVDs from regions 0, 1, 2, 3
and 4.
>16. Any unique features?
Judging from posts to agvgc the audio out jacks are quite unusual, I
use them as stereo input to my home cinema decoder, so anything
connected to the TV automatically uses the home cinema setup. This
means I can have 3 consoles, a DVD player and a digibox all plugged
into two daisy-chained Argos scart switchers, and my N64 into the
composite scart socket, and get prologic sound from them all (5.1 for
DVD and Xbox). With no cable swapping. Nice.
>17. Would you buy the same brand again?
Possibly, cos the picture is excellent, but I'd make sure of NTSC
support first. In honesty, I'd look at Toshiba before Philips.
>18. If not what was the main reason you wouldn't?
NTSC.

looks great through RGB.

The colour is clean

You can h4x0r the image and shift it to the right in a service mode (the
standard service mode for quite a lot of LG tellies can be accessed by
pressing the OK button on the TV and remote for a few seconds), however
because the Gamecube is so grate it already has a left-shift-
correctoriser in its setup mode.

RF:
Spectrum 48K, Systema TV Boy II
Composite:
NES, N64
RGB:
PlayStation, PlayStation 2, SNES, GameCube, Dreamcast
> 14. Do you run an import console and if so does it frame the 60hz
> signal properly or are there picture problems?
I don't have an import console. However, this set "does" NTSC from a
composite source without a problem, and it also does 60Hz beautifully.
There is a tiny little bit of flickering the top left-hand corner while
doing 60Hz, but it's not too noticable.
> 15. Does the set work well with dvds or is it macrovision sensitive

No problems with DVD's.
> 16. Any unique features?
It has a really really shit game built into it. Luckily you can disable
it in the service menu. It works with just about any PAL signal it can
find, so it works all over Europe - apart from evil SECAM using France.
> 17. Would you buy the same brand again?
Definitely. When I'm rich, I might invest in an LG Flatron.

I bought it at a German supermarket. It came with a 24 month guarantee
and the woman at the counter rang me a taxi so I could take it home. I
think that counts as good service.

Shite. Little bit of sideways movement when large areas of white on screen.
RGB scart with the Playstation shifted about half an inch to the left of the
screen. Seems to be alright with the GC but you can set the offset with that.
I haven't seen it with a 60Hz signal yet as I don't have any compatible GC games.

Okay, just a few tips... If it's like my telly, you can cycle through the
different menus by pressing the yellow fastext button on your remote,
store the settings by pressing "OK", and exit service mode by pressing the
"TV/AV" button. Also if you telly has different screen settings (mine has
Normal, Wide and Zoom) then you can save different settings for each
one...

A little colour streaking if the 'wrong' colours are side by side. Not
too noticeable.

No problems in this regard, the streaking can occur on any area of the

Tiny left shift, about 2mm. Correctable in a service menu though I

Its 1.5 watts of mono glory! THD only 10%. They fit an awesome 3W
speaker just to be safe. It works you hear stuff that is all.
>6. AV Inputs (how many scarts, front inputs etc)?
>
1 full feature RGB scart, front av inputs. No s-video at all.
>7. General view of picture quality and whats good and bad?

Picture quality is generally good. Contrast levels are superb, detail
isn't brilliant but colours are very vibrant. I think the limitation
here is the resolution of the tube it ain't amazing and I would
imagine the dot pitch would be something like 0.42mm or worse.

Its totally clean.
>9. Is the convergence good to you get a left shift on RGB scart images

The convergence ain't brilliant. With the text up you can see that its
not perfect but not bad.
>10. How old is the set?

3 years approx.
>11. How much did you pay for the set?

I used some argos vouchers which i got cheap off my visa card plus
another shop discount voucher to get the set for about £115 when it
should have been about £140.
>12. Has it been reliable or are there any issues you'd like to mention
>like LOPT buzz or any other slightly annoying noises?

No real issues.
>13. Which consoles have you used on the set and how were they

>
It really only gets used with the dreamcast as its in the dining room
with the exercise bike. This is connected via RGB with great results
visually. I have also used it with a US N64 and it gave an excellent
picture with this console even though other tvs wouldn't. I put this
down to the excellent contrast levels of this set.
>14. Do you run an import console and if so does it frame the 60hz
>signal properly or are there picture problems?
>
Its not ntsc compatible via composite but no problems with rgb except
the left shift shows a less than vertical display on the right side of
the screen. Its a little bit bowed. Only marginally though at about
1/5th of a centimetre variation from the middle compared to top and
bottom.
>15. Does the set work well with dvds or is it macrovision sensitive

Never used this set with dvds.
>16. Any unique features?

Well theres fastext with a 8 page memory! Its a basic set but
generally the picture is excellent but you get the impression it would
be a lot better if only they spent a few more minutes or even seconds
setting up the picture at the factory but this can be said for a lot
of sets.
>
>17. Would you buy the same brand again?
>
I wouldn't pay full price for a Hitachi set but if it was a good deal
I would go for it.
>18. If not what was the main reason you wouldn't?
>
I feel the convergence should be slightly better and the tube used is
a fairly cheap tube I would imagine or has a fairly poor dot pitch.
>19. Did you get good customer service from the shop you bought it at?
>
It was from Argos and they are always pretty friendly I find. In fact
initially I bought a sharp set but when I went to collect it, I found
they had given me a thomson set but they said they were out of stock
and this was a better replacement. I took it home and it was an
excellent set but was worried about long term reliability so told them
when you get a sharp back in stock can I swop it other. They said yes!
I had the thomson about 2 months and then went in and swopped it for
the sharp but the sharp had changed it no longer had a headphone
socket that I needed even though it was mentioned in the spec of the
catalogue. That went back and I got the Hitachi. I needed the
headphone socket as I work nights and I'm often up playing games at
odd hours over the weekend. I have to say of the three the Thomson was
the best set but Which reliability survey had shown the thomson sets
to be the least reliable and so didn't fancy keeping the one I had.

£510 including cabinet & 3 year warranty. It was from an auction - Hamlets

Direct or high street).

Fine so far in the time I've had it.

NTSC Gamecube. All these PAL: Gamecube, XBox, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn, PS1
RGB'd. SNES, MegaDrive composite.

Import Gamecube games are good - NTSC US or NTSC J. Likewise import DC
games. 50 or 60hz is good too.

Picture is fine with DVDs. I only use the XBox to play them though.

DC, PS2, Saturn, PS1, XBox all connected via RGB SCART
PAL Gamecube RGB SCART, US/JP Gamecube S-video

DC, PS2 run in RGB - 60hz is crystal clear.
TV supports NTSC, so US import GC runs 60hz NTSC S-Video. Picture is
excellent - but not as clean as RGB.

2x SCART (1 RGB) plus 1x Composite in/out and stereo audio in/out

Generally good. Colour balance good, picture is crisp and detailed (especially
with RGB). Dot crawl with composite is very slight, but obviously the picture
is very blurry in this case. Slight flicker in 60Hz.

Very, very slight darkening in top right; not generally noticeable.

Convergence is good; there is no perceptible left shift on RGB scart. There

Dreamcast (RGB scart), Gamecube (Composite)

N/A - but I've run import games on my Dreamcast and they're fine - the 60Hz
signal displays correctly (albeit with a slight flicker)
>15. Does the set work well with dvds or is it macrovision sensitive

I've never noticed a problem with macrovision DVDs, but then I don't know if I

Did buzz when I first got it. Pioneer engineer fixed and it's been

PS1, N64 were via scart switch box. PS2 connected to one of the S-Vid

Dunno. What's the standard? (It's certainly not widescreen, this one)

mono

One RF, one SCART

RF quality sucks, RGB SCART quality rivals VGA.

RF jitters sometimes, SCART is steady. Although having said that I've only ever tried
the SCART connection with my DC and once with a VCR - long enough to work out it's
60Hz-incompatible, so the picture was rolling too much to make a judgement..

No convergence, and what menu?

4 years minimum.

Lord knows.

It's RGB-capable but 60Hz-incapable. If it supported 60Hz I'd be quite happy with it.

Master System, Mega Drive/MCD, Saturn, Dreamcast, SNES. All connected via RF solely,
bar the Dreamcast which is currently connected via an official SCART lead.

N/A since the telly can't do 60Hz anyway

Not tested with DVDs.

Nicam stereo at the moment. Planning to invest in a Dolby ProLogic II & 5.1

2 * Rear SCART (1 RGB)
No front inputs
> 7. General view of picture quality and whats good and bad?
Great, considering the age of the telly. It's not really going to compete
with a brand-new system
> 8. Is the colour clean across the image or have you got

Can't say I've noticed discolouration.
> 9. Is the convergence good to you get a left shift on RGB scart images

I've not found details of a menu on this set to fix that (too old, I guess);
a shame, because it has a good half-inch or so of left-shift. Praise be to
the Gamecube RGB fix widget :-)
> 10. How old is the set?
Jeez. Ten years, maybe?
> 11. How much did you pay for the set?
Nothing, it was a hand-me-down from the parents after they got a widescreen
system.
> 12. Has it been reliable or are there any issues you'd like to mention
> like LOPT buzz or any other slightly annoying noises?
Reasonably reliable. A few glitches (Fails to power on fully sometimes, for
instance) - I'd attribute these to age, they're certainly not major issues.

N64 (Composite cables into non-RGB SCART socket)

I don't have an import console. I have run import games, though; there are
some warping effects when running those.

My fingers were too quick for me it should read LOPT for Line Output
Transformer. Apologies if LOPT isn't the right abbreviation but it
seemed to ring a bell from my days of working in a tv/hifi shop a few
years ago.

I reported this problem to my dealer (have the same issue here on a
32PW9576).
They can't find a solution, i was close to demanding a new set as they fail
to fix it, but im starting to think this problem will exist on any
replacement (not an isolated problem but a general thing), so asking for a
new set would be useless then.... right... hmmm. Any thoughts?

One each RGB, s-video, composite and VGA passthough. The RGB uses the
Japanese standard, same connector as SCART, but a different pinout, it's
quite simple to modify an SCART cable, though.
I use a separate composite/s-video switchbox to hook up all my stuff at
once. The RGB plug is on the front of the box, so switching that is
painless.
>
> 7. General view of picture quality and whats good and bad?

Excellent picture quality in RGB, but the s-video and composite don't look
as nice as through some TVs I've seen. With virtual scanlines turned on,
it's fairly average, though. There's a number of picture settings that can
be altered such as gamma correction and a switch that can alter the levels
of the RGB line for use with an arcade PCB board.
The monitor allows for further alterations such as pin-cushion and rotation
all automatically saved.
And, of course, the Dreamcast gets hooked up directly via VGA and that's
simply beautiful.

Excellent color from both the upscan converter and the monitor.

There was a left shift on RGB, but it's menu correctable and the RGB picture
settings are saved separately from the composite/s-video settings, so I
haven't had to worry about it.

Atrai 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision and various Pong machines through
the rf plug on the back of my DVD player. Famicom/NES and TurboGrafx-16
through composite. Commodore 128, SNES, Jaguar, 3DO and N64 through
s-video. Sega Master System, Genesis/Sega CD/32X, Saturn and Dreamcast
through RGB. Various JAMMA configurations through the PCB RGB input. And
Dreamcast (plus my PC) through VGA.

I'm in the US, so I guess all my consoles are import to you guys. The
upscan converter handles 60Hz NTSC perfectly and outputs a 640x480 60Hz VGA
image. It also accepts 50Hz PAL and puts out a 800x600 50Hz image. I find
too much flicker in the 50Hz image, I don't like it on a normal TV and it's
even worse on a VGA monitor. Note that the newer XRGB2plus seems to have
had the PAL decoder removed.

The XRGB-1 had Macrovision issues, but they put a defeater into the XRGB-2
which I have, so no problems.
>
> 16. Any unique features?

In addition to the normal VGA output, the XRGB-2 has a second out for NES
PC-9801 and compatible monitors. These would have a lower sync of 15.75,
but still non-interlaced, I believe.
>
> 17. Would you buy the same brand again?

Yes, in fact, I'm considering an upgrade to the XRGB2plus since it has
component and d-terminal inputs and a few other features.
The HP monitor is good, but not so great that I'll feel the need to get my
next from them as well.

I like it a lot. The upscan limits the size of monitor you can have, of
course, since VGA monitors bigger than 22" are ridiculously priced, but for
a college student like me who lives entirely crammed into a tiny bedroom,
it's the perfect set-up.

NICAM (Near Instantaneous Companded Audio Multiplex) is a system for
transmitting digital audio alongside analogue TV broadcasts. It's really
quite funky (uncompressed 14-bit 32-ish kHz stereo), but is becoming more
redundant since digital TV will make analogue TV redundant in a few years
if the Beeb and the Government have their way. Ho-hum.
No ones probably interested in that, but I think it's a shame that it'll
be made redundant for the badly compressed MP2 streams that digital telly
gives...

Well although I admit my explanation/rant was a tad-offtopic (sorry for
actually caring about the quality of audio on the telly), I have found the
thread to be quite interesting - especially if we could correlate this
info and people can use it as a rough guide of what kind of telly they
should buy to improve their audio visual experience.
Buying a telly these days is quite a complex affair for gamers - we all
want tellies which support RGB, some of us want ones which will support
NTSC, and we all want tellies which actually display a good picture -
these are the things which you can't ask in your local Currys because the
students who work there haven't got a clue...

reliable, no noises,
the set was built for the Australian market hence it has geomagnetic field
adjustment as Australia is so big, using the set in Europe is like having it
upside down apparantly, so it needs degausing by unplugging from wall every
few months.

Although luckily enough, the the Sky Plus digibox comes with a digital
optical out which means that for those of us with the right setup, we'll be
able to enjoy TV with surround sound.
And although you may not think that many programs are shown in surround,
look closely at the end credits - the X-Files, Stargate SG1 & the Simpsons
are all broadcast in Dolby Surround, we just haven't had the technology to
access it.

4 - 3 scarts (1 of which is RGB) & S-Video at the front. Also composite &
stereo inputs in front.

Outstanding - the DRC-MF chip inside double the horizontal lines to 1250
from 625 giving amazingly detailed picures.

Nope - bright & crisp on everything.

The on/off button is a touch ropey - you switch it on only to find that it's

> Although luckily enough, the the Sky Plus digibox comes with a digital

You're able to 'enjoy TV with surround sound' right now (and have
been for a good few years) as most modern TV series and films are
encoded in Dolby Surround which is an analogue format, designed to
work over the stereo outputs of your device. It's not as good as
Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS, but it still sounds better than stereo with
properly encoded material.
> And although you may not think that many programs are shown in surround,
> look closely at the end credits - the X-Files, Stargate SG1 & the Simpsons

Is this a troll? Dolby Surround as I mentioned above is an
ANALOGUE format and can work with anything that has a stereo audio
output - satellite receivers, VCRs even game consoles. It's been
around for years. I even remember some old Amiga games having Dolby
Surround encoding in their sound fx.
Gav
They're all mastered using Dolby Pro-Logic not Dolby Digital, so any
stereo pair fed to a Pro-Logic amp (or built in TV decoder) has been
able to get Pro-Logic surround sound for the last five years or more.
Thus far in the UK only Sky have broadcast any genuine Dolby Digital,
and even then not very oten. Just the odd film or two on the widescreen
movie channel.

Quite sharp picture, poor geometry by standards of modern monitors but
average by TV standards, minimal flicker at 60Hz (less than modern
monitors designed for higher refresh rates), noticeable flicker at 50Hz.

Standard high pitched buzzing noise, no worse than normal TVs.

Chipped PSX, US import PS2, both run perfectly. 60Hz looks significantly
better than 50Hz because of less flicker.

I guess there's no point in returning my set for a checkup then. Too bad,
cos once u've noticed the lines during a movie they get pretty distracting
:)
Does anyone know if these lines look the same as the ones with Sony
Trinitron tubes report? Philips use similar technique?

this is a total guess so is probably wrong but it isnt somethink akin to
the horizontal trinitron lines you get with FST TV's & monitors is it?
> As an attempt to have the definitive thread relating to how good tvs

Looking at the fact that many people choose their TV on the basis of how
good they work with a console, it should be acceptable for people to buy a
SVGA monitor for console use, the Dreamcast on a PC monitor is far superior,
it really shows that the main advantage a PC has (graphics wise) is actually
down to the monitor.
We should be demanding that all consoles come with a genuine VGA option.
DOH teach me to read full posts before posting! you mentioned trinitron
lines already.
on my monitor they are 2 very faint lines going across the screen
(horizontal) about 1/3 & 2/3rd of the way up the screen.
they are very faint & only notice them on a white solid screen etc, but
they are definately there.
this may be similar to your vertical lines i dunno.
VGA option maybe, however give me my 28inch TV over 17inch monitor every
day. I think better to campaign for a devent RGB lead out of the box, FFS
with the ps2 & xbox you need a scart socket anyway so may as well make it
a fully wired one.
back to the monitor vs TV
despite what my wife tells me, i firmly believe size matters ;o)
but if you only have a small TV then yes a monitor may well be the way to
go.
I don't think that is quite true.
>We should be demanding that all consoles come with a genuine VGA option.
I would rather play games on a huge TV through RGB SCART that on a
little monitor any day of the week.

look what people are spending on TV's , you dont get little monitors for
that kind of money, you get 21" ers
the advantage of huge TV's is that you can sit further away, like on a comfy
sofa.

Yes, but they're getting much bigger tellies for the price of a 21"
monitor. Just looking at a website now, and the cheapest 21" monitor I
can see is 350 quid + vat. I had a mate who bought a 28" widescreen telly
for roughly half price a few weeks ago.. I mean, my 21" telly which does
lovely RGB cost about a third of that 350 quid monitor!

And you can watch telly on them.

21" may be a large monitor, but it is a very small tv!
A monitor just isn't the preferred medium for 99% of the console buying public
IMHO

so have you tried both?
a 27" Quintrix Flat TV v 19" monitor, the monitor gives awesome quality on
the DC, much prefered than the TV although you have to sit closer, fair
enough if a game has good enough gameplay then quality doesnt matter, which
is what we all hope for these days anyway.
because only one console offers the option (maybe 2 with xbox)
this thread proves console buyers care enough about the TV to spend a lot of
money, although most seem to think that size matters.
The primary reason for the price difference between monitors and TVs is that monitors
generally use a higher-quality CRT than TVs. This comes at a price to your pocket but
gives higher dot pitch = higher quality images. And 21" may be a small TV because
you're supposed to sit further away from it. Sit at the same distance away from a 21"
TV and 21" monitor and it becomes inconsequential.
> A monitor just isn't the preferred medium for 99% of the console
> buying public IMHO
Perhaps. But let's face it, how much would it cost to allow true VGA rendering on
console X? Sega managed it with the Dreamcast, and they didn't have anywhere near the
budget of Sony or Microsoft.

No thanks - I'd rather sit on a couch and watch a 28" telly than
hunch over a monitor screen to play DC games.

Widescreen.

Nicam, although I don't use it at all (feed outputs from digibox, consoles
etc to stereo hifi

Let's see.. 1xRGB SCART, 1xSCART, composite and SVHS (molded into one
channel) inputs on front.
>

Well, I haven't seen DVDs or Xbox on any great televisions, and once I got
RGB SCART leads for all my consoles, I've been pretty damn pleased with it.

It was discoloured but only when I was feeding my SCARTs through the shitty
digibox.

A slight left shift, but nothing goes off the edge. And I can just go to the
AV1 channel (instead of the RGB) channel and it still stays in the RGB mode
but shoves the picture back.
If by bad convergence, you mean straight, high-contrast lines not being
straight (such as the edges of the menus in SSX Tricky), then I have bad
convergence. It may well be down to the unofficial RGB SCART cable I'm using
with the 'box though.

It looks quite new, but as I say, it's a rental, so I don't have a clue.

Well I paid the first month off a year ago. I keep meaning to go pay the
rest but you know, it would cost me money.

LOPT buzz? If that's buzz around text etc, that is there with anything but
RGB SCART. But I don't use that anymore, for anything. So no worries.. Oh
you mean audio buzz. No, I don't use the sound on it.

PS2 (S-Video), Xbox (initially S-Video, then RGB SCART - BIG improvement),
GameCube (RGB SCART).

I don't run an import console but it copes with PAL60 mode and NTSC DVDs
absolutely perfectly. (runs over and strokes telly, apologising for not
paying for it)

It works excellently with DVDs.

I broke the front flap on it. And it has two homers on the speakers.

Nope. When I *buy*, I buy Sony. Even though their customer service is shit.
I've been waiting 3 months for my beloved MiniDisc.

Yes although I suspect if I walked in there without a million quid, I'd be
shot.

It's my telly, so 8. But one day I'll have the best telly ever and I'll look
back and think "-1".

not as such, but have seen GTA3 on the PC which is superior to my ps2
counter part in just about every way, but would still pick the ps2 version
just becasue of big screan telly & played a few games on a TV out graphics
card on a telly.

I'm well aware of the differences in monitor and and TV tube quality.
Consoles aren't about sitting hunched over 2 inches away from a monitor though.
Consoles are mass market entertainment, and as much as we, the "hardcore" gaming
community, like to believe the games companies make products for our benefit,
they don't. Hardware is produced to work against TVs as that's what the mass
market want to use them with.

screen door, chicken wire etc...
LCD projectors are made up of a grid of pixels, if you get close enough to the
screen you can see the individual pixels within the grid, much like looking at a
newspaper image close-up and seeing the individual dots.
It looks like you looking at the image through a screen door, hence the name.
The panny has a relatively low pixel resolution, meaning larger pixels for an
image running at the same size as a more expensive projector with a higher
resolution.
Eh, this is a can of worms best left unopened. It's simply a matter of
preference, some people prefer bid screens, some people prefer the amazing
clarity of VGA. Personally, I would prefer to have a large screen (but only
if it's going to be larger than 35"), but given my current circumstances, it
makes the mst sense for me to have just a VGA monitor. I've got a set-up
that I quite like with a 19" monitor and my couch set up close enough that I
can sit on it for gaming (and Internet actually) and still have a perfectly
large display. Like I said, though, it's nothing more than personal
preference. The point is moot anyway, since consoles starting with this
generation include options for high-definition progressive, which offers the
best of both worlds...to those who can afford it.

8 (losses 2 points because it's a relatively modern set, with a real good
picture, with no detoriation after 6 years, but it has no 60hz option.
If you use more than one tv please reply twice rather than fill in the
same answers mentioning both sets together. The more replies we get
the more we will know about the different brands. Obviously if your
not interested fair enough but you don't see many tv reviews directly
related to gaming use so I think it will be helpful.

This is a monitor, not a TV - but I LOVE it for gaming purposes as I
can easily rotate the screen. I had to unscrew the rotation mechanism
and flip it around so that Tate mode games play the right way up. Thi
is the perfect setup for 2d shooting heaven!

Popping sound on certain high freuqencies. Plus it's just had to go in

convergence and geometry are good. Awful left shift and the right
border can be seen and peaks and troughs with the brightness of the
image. Truly terrible. A service engineer came and adjustments made to
in the service menu don't effect rgb images only
tuner/composite/s-video. A totally hopeless set for rgb use.

The set is both poorly designed (rgb scart problems) and poorly made.
Literally thrown together in spain. Service engineer said the tube was
fu**ed and recommended replacement. He said Sharp sets have many
problems and a short term live. This contrasts with sharp video
recorders which are just about the most reliable and have excellent
picture quality but then they aren't made in spain.
