Hey guys, here's a rundown of our illustrious Welsh National Championship.

*a few paragraphs on my personal performance, skip ahead if you just want
the t8 players/look at the decklists*

When i turned up people had been scouting around and the breakdown was that
~50% of the field was going to be affinity... and that included most of the
better players. With that information in mind I switched my two Shraps out
of the deck for Oxidize (with hindsight, no Blasts was awful. It's not like
they are bad vs Affinity anyway, just Goblins really, so I should have cut
Pyrite Spellbomb instead... erm anyway...). Detonate is crap by the way...
Have you played with it? It's a 2cc Sorcery that kills Skullclamp.
Sorcery! 2cc! Shatters probably would have been more use for those using
the Dets since everyone was boarding out Welding Jar... no that's completely
wrong. They SHOULD have been boarding out the Jars, but no-one was. Go
Welsh Nats! Anyway, Oxidize, that's where the real power is :) I ended up
4-0-2 in with affinity in the swiss, beating ponza, goblins, 2 affinity, and
drawing a third affinity. Those aren't IDs even though they came in the
last two rounds... I was knackered by the end of day 2 and playing fairly
slowly throughout the tournament... and obviously getting paired against
Madog isn't going to improve the chances of finishing a round quickly
either, especially when he's playing some Pseudo-combo/loop Cleric deck.

I did awfully in the limited. It was the first time I'd seen any fifth
dawn, but no excuses etc i was drafting like crap, ended 3-3 over the two
days, including 2 losses to Martin Lawrence. I first picked a Solar Tide
with him feeding me. I didn't see much more in that colour but the red and
blue I picked up weren't giving me much joy either, nor did I see anything
really presenting itself so when I kept getting white cards in Darksteel, I
set my sights on Wr and Crystal shard/the guy that changes colours of
everything since I had a crazy amount of interactions with that. I got
paired against Martin who was likely to be white too, and he was. I drew
Solar Tide both games. Sadly, I was never able to cast it it game one
without getting wrecked due to his Skullclamp and my nothing of any
importance, so I hung in there trying to wait until an opportunity arose to
get something meaningful from the sorcery, but my last creature got Stasis
Cocooned and he attacked me. I could have Tided my go but i decided to
scoop instead. In game 2 I realised I was almost certainly going to lose
unless i could cast it and win in one or two turns, so set it up and had to
hope that the few cards in my hand would deter him from saccing his white
spellbomb for life, using that to pump grimclaw bats, and swinging in.
Sadly he went for it and I couldn't "turn the tide" on the next turn. In
another round, some crappy kid kept drawing both Bonesplitter and Cranial
Plating against me, after throwing away game 1, by playing out Myr Matrix,
then blocking me double sunbursted Suntouched MYR with two 1/1 creatures.
Yes, he was atrocious. I sided out my blue for more consistency... of
course, I lost the next game to a 5/1 Goblin Striker. So what about that
Solar Tide I drew against him? I had to use it to kill an Auriok
Glaivemaster. This was after I used my Barbed Lightning on the first one.
I lost that game, after he tapped out to play a Granite Shard vs my
Transfixer and Emissary of Hope, I realised I was going to get caned if I
sat around doing nothing, so dropped the 4/4 that dies with no artifacts in
play, but he untapped, fed my Emissary a point of damage and Purged my
crappy 2/2 artifact guy (his only removal spell obviously). So much for
bomb white rares.

So, after all of that, I ended up 7th in the swiss. That meant a pairing vs
Richard, who was looking for revenge after I eeked out a win in the mirror
in day 1, where he would have won had he one more life point, or won had I
one less. Must remember those pings and attacks I guess ;) Back to our
1/4s, I threw away game 1, probably? It was one of those tricky mirror
games where you have 53754376 decisions to make, don't see where you messed
up but figure it was probably somewhere, although had I played differently,
perhaps he could have upped his game and won it anyway. That was basically
how our deciding game in the swiss turned out.. He threw away game 2 of the
quarters from a strong position with an all-out attack from a 3/3 Ravager,
1/1 Ravager, 5/5 Enforcer, Worker into my Frogmite, Frogmite, Enforcer, 1/1
Ravager. After all the blocks and sacrifices were made, I had an 11/11
Enforcer and a Frogmite, he had a 13/13 Enforcer. An attack and a Shrap on
my go dealt exactly the eighteen needed to kill him. GGs. Sadly for me, he
double or triple Shrapped me, with Disciple assistance, out of the match in
game 3.

*end aside*

Congratulations to Richard on (finally) winning it, well done to Ioan on
nearly pulling off the Elf & Nail vs the world (affinity) top 8, and unlucky
to Thomas Washington who owes me two boosters for thinking that Ioan was
going to win when the top 8 got announced. ;)

Great thanks go to Jim Grimmett, for providing me with the cards! I will
get some boosters down to you for that! Thanks again :)

Cheers, Jim.
