Congrats to The Place For Games for running both the English and the
Scottish nationals on their own this year!

Keep up the good work guys, and hope to see you next year!

Yes well done Carl. I mean with your lack of experience in running events
an' all. How did you manage it? i know you've been doing a few 8 player
side events here and there at other people's events (with someone like Colin
supervising you onbviously) but it was a bit of a big jump to do not one but
TWO Nats.

Keep it up and best of luck with your level 2 judging exam next year!

;o)

With surely extra credit to be given for arranging the English nationals in
a desperately difficult place to get to and getting a correspondingly dismal
turnout...?

AANND planning on the same place next year. This should allow the few who
actually turned up to tell everyone EXACTLY how interesting the area was and
how easy it was to get to! Shrewd!

Was the turn out really about 150 in total for the whole event?

yes.

Are they serious about using the same venue next year?

If they are I can't figure out why their are a lot better venues in the
Midlands for less than they paid (see below).

It was an awful venue, terrible to get to. Not particularly large,
excessively expensive food.

If the idea was to have an interesting venue, it failed miserably. All I
can say is that as we were in what is the VIP suite right next to the pits.

Motor racing is far less glamorous than it's made out to be.

The Motor Museum is rebuilt which was reasonable, and you can hire most
of the larger hotels suites in the Birmingham/Midlands area for sub 6k a
day.

The Britannia which was used as part of Nationals 2004 is about the
cheapest in the Birmingham area (mainly due to the food charge)if you go
on a per person rather than room hire basis.

Jury's on Broad Street is very reasonable, I used to hire most of the
conference rooms their on an annual basis, one is capable of holding 300
people easily and another one approx 250 people. The rooms are easily
divided and configured as required cost was 15K - 18K for a 2/3 day
conference and that was during the week, rather than the weekend when
rates are substantially cheaper.

You can't beat Castle Donington for nightlife though.

The nearby village of Melbourne even had a bus stop with kids drinking
thunderbird fortified wine.

I sense a theme here...the more I hear about it compared to previous
English Nats the happier I am we didn't attend the event.

The traders were good though. Best in the UK apparently, well
certainly one of the cheapest.

That for a 3 day event would go over budget. Also I like the venue, it
WAS easy to get to by public transport if you bothered to put in a
little bit of effort (Train to derby, then a £2.30 bus to East
Midlands Airport, where you could get off the bus outside the entrance
and walk across the park, or get a £4 taxi from the airport). TBH I
think that magic players are so amazingly lazy at trying to get
anywhere.

I admitt it is a tad harder to get to than the NEC, but easier than the
motor bike museum, which was awsome too.

It was difficult getting to the venue from one's hotel using public
transport. Lee - how did you get from your hotel to the venue in the
mornings? Basically I think you needed access to a car, either that or
a taxi.

I was fairly happy with the venue personally, I was in a hotel just
down the road from the race track and I thought the room was nice and
big. The downsides I think were very poor side event organisation and
the fact that realistically you needed a car to get to and from the
venue every day. Oh, and the food was too expensive and of limited
variety.

Oh comon Dave

The venue was everything everyone has said about it ie expensive, in
the middle of nowhere and quite small. I understand that there is cost
to consider when doing these types of things, but Nationals is not only
a tournament, its a place where we all get together have a chat and
hopefully go out for a beer together. When you have to get cars
involved in all this, the 'going out' element becomes mute, leaving
those that get screwed out by turn 4 T&N both games (FFS) unable to
drown their sorrows.
