Hi,

Because of a problem with our postal house we have not been able to
get this out before the first set of regionals so I am posting it
here.

Please pass it on to anyone who might be intrested.

Nationals 2000 FAQ

Q: Is it true that the Nationals are being split in to the
separate countries ?
A: Yes. We have split up the UK into 3 countries, England,
Scotland & Wales.

Q: What is happing about the Irish Nationals ?
A: This will stay the same as in 1999.

Q: What is happening with Northern Ireland. ?
A: Due to the low numbers of players in Northern Ireland it has
been decided not to run a Nationals for Northern Ireland. This will be
reviewed every year. So if you live in Northern Ireland you will
automatically be entered in the English Nationals unless you contact
us to advise us you want to compete in the Irish Nationals.

Q: Are their regionals for all these nationals ?
A: There will be regionals for the English, Scottish and Irish
Nationals but not for the Welsh Nationals. Included with the FAQ is a
flyer with the details.

Q: So how do I qualify for the Nationals ?
A: You can qualify in a regional, be in last years national team
or be in the top 25 on combined rankings in your country.

Q: What happens if I play in the Welsh nationals but am in the
top 25 on combined rankings or was in last years team. ?
A: You earn byes. Byes are automatic wins for the first few
rounds.

Q: How many people qualify from a regional. ?
A: This will depend on the country you are in. If you live in
England 1 person will qualify for every 8 players plus the top 8 but
if you live in Scotland or Ireland 1 person will qualify for every 4
players plus the top 8.

Q: What is a combined ranking ?
A: Your combined ranking is a composite of your Standard (40%),
Extended (15%) & Limited (45%) rankings.

Q: When will the top 25 be announced ?
A: 31st March 2000

Q: How much does it cost ?
A: #5 but the local organisers can add additional costs to cover
venue costs or additional prizes

Q: What format are the nationals this year ?
A: Day 1 will be booster draft with 2 Mercadian Masques and 1
Nemesis booster, day 2 will be standard. The top 8 will then play off
using their standard decks.

Q: Can I come to the Nationals even if I don't qualify ?
A: Yes, there will be plenty to do and watch around the
nationals. More details of side events will be announced soon.

Q: Can I compete in a regional if I am already qualified ?
A: No, once you are qualified you can no longer compete in a
regional

Q: Is it true there are qualifiers the day before the English
Nationals ?
A: Yes. The English nationals are being run over 3 days this
year. The first day will include a series of last chance qualifiers.
These will be very different from the other qualifiers, they will be
single elimination events with only the top 2 players qualifying but
they will be limited to 32 players.

Q: With it now being 4 Nationals how many people will qualify for
each National ?
A: This will be the same as last year. 8 players will qualify to
compete in the European Championships in Paris and the top 4 players
will qualify to compete in the Worlds in Brussels.

Q: Who is going to win ?
A: We don't know but why don't you come along and see for
yourself

How much is the Welsh Nationals going to cost for non-byes players to enter?
Also helpful would be a list of stuff like starting times etc for each day,
and whether we still have to turn up at the start of day 1 with byes or
trundle in for the second draft (phone in registration?)
When do you have to pick your deck for day 2?
Beginning of day 1? End day 1? Beginning day 2?
How are the top 4/8 being decided?
Top 8 at end of day 2 go into single elim, if you lose you don't make worls,
or some other method?

So you can go 12-0 and then lose in the first round of the top 8, not going
to worlds because you are obviously such a bad player.
Why is it not being done like UK nationals last year where the top 4 at the
end of the two days of Swiss make worlds, and then top 4 play off for Welsh
Champion.
An hour's less work for you guys too...

Anyway, what wizards staff/other judges will be down for the Welsh
Nationals. I need to know who to send Easter eggs to.
