In ' The Times' today it says they are trying to buy some of Morrisons stores.
Well that is sort of it - in a nutshell.
Will be interested to see how it goes.

That would make sence.
But Morrisons are only forced to sell where the combined Morrisons/Safeways
has a *local* monopoly, that is where the two groups were in direct local
competition. AFAIK this only happened in the Midlands, not the North.
As I once calculated that Morrisons had stores at two miles intervals
covering central Bradford and the outskirts, and we do not have a Safeways
ATM, I doubt I will ever be able to join the Waitrose core of this group

A quick 'google' and it looks as if we are both right.
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3566925.stm - plus more urls
Harrogate, N Yorkshire
Otley, W Yorkshire
Sandbach, Cheshire
Sheffield, S Yorkshire
Southport, Merseyside
Willerby (Hull), E Yorkshire
These are places rumoured to be likely to get a Waitrose store.
Are they not in the north??? :)
Well some of them ...

Bit difficult to define North that way if one lives in Berwick On Tweed,
Or perhaps Cape Wrath, John o' Groats, or Lerwick ;-)

O in Scotland so they are south for me
Yers the list apparently
Refits will cost £2m per store. The full list of stores to be converted
is: Sandbach, Abergavenny, Harrogate, Hitchin, Swaffham, Barry, Otley,
Dartford, Lincoln, Sheffield (Ecclesall Road), Wolverhampton, Willerby,
Rushden, Fulham, Towcester, Newport in Shropshire, Worthing, Southport
and Farnham.

Nothing near enough to Bradford :-)
BTW According to Look North, BBC1 local news, Morrisons will only rebrand
50 Safeways stores in the first year. At £2m per store, you can see why.
However, I bet you will see "M" (Morrisons) brand goods on the shelves
soon. These are middle of the market for quality, and below middle of the
market for price, well worth buying once to see if you like them. Also
Betterbuy which is Morrisons cheap brand, variable quality, but worth
trying.

Don't be daft.
I'll be very happy to see Waitrose in Leeds.

Hmm. That will be in direct competition to Booths in Ilkley.
Much as I like Waitrose I'll still travel that extra six miles up the road,
Ilkley has other attractions and Booths has served us very well.

What constitutes "southern pretentious food"? I'm more than happy
to pay good money for, say, fresh sushi, is that pretentious? I
don't think so.
If quality, choice and innovation are pretentious, i'm all for

Pigs snouts as well as tails, I could add the nether region to that as well
