Whilst helping an elderly relative who had moved house I found a can of
Freon (CFCs) (mostly R12 with some other CFC), which was sold by Boots the
Chemist as a freezing spray, presumably in the 1980s. This can was not
just using CFCs as the propellant, they constituted the entire contents of
the can. It had never been used and was well past its expiry date, though
why such long-lived gases need an expiry date I don't know. Apparently
(from various websites) the 200 gram can of CFCs, as well as its
ozone-destroying properties, also would result in the same greenhouse
effect as 1700 kilograms of CO2, which seems like quite a lot. So I took
it to the place where old fridges are collected, so that the CFCs could be
disposed of properly. There was indeed a pile of collected fridges,
presumably awaiting transport to the de-gassing facility. I told the
attendant in Tovil that the can contained the same amount of CFCs as
several fridges. He took the can from me, looked at it for three seconds,
and without warning threw it into the ordinary scrap metal hopper, from
where I was not permitted to retrieve it. He seemed quite pleased with
himself.
