At 0800, Tuesday 2nd February, Chief forester Robin Pollard will send
in his chain-saw gang to liquidate 38 trees.
The excuse for this destruction of a beautiful habitat is that car parking is needed!
Why? For whom?
The folks who run the cafe have ambitions. The cafe aspires to be a restaurant
the year round, and the shop sell more imported "tourist tat" . The "craft "centre, where
you might pay £40 for a small wheelbarrow style planter, of year 2 schoolboy standard,
and sundry other items. Three real restaurant businesses, with a large car-park
just 1/2 a mile away at Rushen Abbey have folded in the last few years because of being too far from the client catchment area.
A level field was available at the other side of the lake, with direct main road access,
so there would be less expenditure, no destruction of trees, no edging down a dangerously narrow lane.
The current plan means cutting back into what appears to be a low, buried limestone cliff ( be able to flog the stone ! ) and make two levels with ramps. It will be "landscaped with trees and plants", and what will happen then? Very little more cash will go into the tills at Silverdale, and the place will become an alternative to Douglas Head, where Junk Minds eat Junk Food, and the resultant debris befouls the whole area.

What can you do?
Ring 01624 66 13 68 and complain, any day except Saturday, between
1200 and one o'clock. The program is "Mannin Line" live on Manx Radio.

Hang on a mo. Why can't people have a little more vision? How big is
the land, how many spaces are wanted, could a minimal low level building
leave room for more trees, how old are what are being axed, were they OK
or going to the dogs, will more trees be planted, can the local
authority be blackmailed into being green and planting 3 times as many
trees as they chop in return for not trying to live in the trees and dig
tunnels, etc. & finally what will the axed trees be used for? All Manx
school woodworking activities for years or will they be logged for sale?
Will they make street furniture and art or will they be burnt?

I have to say that bad news needn't be al bad and every tree needs
culling when mature as it stops producing anything like the oxygen a
growing tree does. (A third.) Trouble is a tree should have been
allowed to grow nearby for 20 - 30 years beforehand so it takes over.
It's that sort of planning we need. I will happily discuss the matter
with the Manx government if asked and act as consultant for the whole
island to provide a 250 year plan. It's thought and care we need, not
going off half cocked.

Regards

[rest of article snipped]

Here's something that'll hopefully cheer you up:

Just forwarding this which I got from FOE - which you probably know
all
about - but just in case not:
***************************
From: "Frank Kennedy" <frankk@mailhost>
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 14:13:17 -0800
To: all-local, biohab
Subject: Manx might...

Positive news from the Isle of Man, where the island FOE group have
been
involved in a fight to save Silverdale Glen from being turned into a
car
park. This campaign has included the first recorded tree-dwelling
protestors in the island's history - and they've not been subject to
any major tirades, which is indicative of something...
Tonight they're having a big fundraiser and celebrating a stay of
execution, as a Member of the Tynwald (IoM parliament) has requested a

debate on the issues. Considering the Min. of Agriculture were
prepared
to sell it off for 38(!!) car spaces close to some "crafty shops",
there
are obviously hidden hands involved...but the campaigners are hopeful
of
complete success.
