Since the film-maker said the Worcester idea wouldn't work because
there wasn't enough time to prepare for it, I went back to my plan to
leave from Canterbury. I tried to organise something with the
"Canterbury Tales" experience - just a press launch in their ghastly
waxwork visitor 'attraction'. But they didn't even reply.
Roodness!

So I began to think I'll just set off from London: get a piligrim's
blessin in Westminster cathedral, do a photo opportunity at Whizz-Kidz
offices nearby, and walk to Newhaven to get the ferry.

Then... <whoosh> Hooray! All your interest in rabit's destination,
sparked off by that TV programme, got me thinkin and readin. An I
found out somethin. The plannin for yer rabit chaplin's departure for
the long long walk have taken a new turn today.

I discovered - while followin up a query that one of you raised - that
there's a replica of the great door of Compostela cathedral (Portal de
la Gloria) in the V&A museum. So I am askin them if I can do my
rabit press launch there! Walk from the replica door of Santiago
cathedral in London; then, 1300 miles later, walk through yer achule
door in Spain. A door-to-door piligrimage! Nice catchy headline.

So rabit's ritied to the V&A to ask em if he can set off from there on
Monday 12th May, then walk to the Catholic cathedral to get a
piligrim's blessin, then go to the Whizz-Kidz offices: and all that is
within a one hour walk. Look at the pictures on the blog and see if
you can tell wich is the reel Portal de la Gloria.

You're goin to love this, it's priceless! I cannot do my pilgrim
press launch in the V&A Museum, dressed in pilgrim gear and with my
pack on my back, because bags have to be left in the cloakroom before
enterin the museum.

"Surely you could make an exception for a charity press launch?"

"No, terribly sorry, but in these days of heightened security..."

I get a bit annoyed by all this. It is not Britain that can't organise
things properly - it is London!

Newcastle and Gateshead built a Millennium bridge that worked and is
stunning.

London built a Millennium bridge that was too wobbly.

Manchester held the Commonwealth Games in 2002 . The facilities were all
built on time and the Games went smoothly and efficiently.

London has a shambles over the re-building of Wembley Stadium.

London has a shambles over Terminal 5.

Heaven help the Olympic Games!

Well, quite frankly, speaking as Lord Coe and justly proud of
everything that New Labour has done for my pockets, I think thre is
too much of this kind of pointless cynicism from you teachers, and
it's about time you got your fingers out and started getting the kids
lined up waving Union Jacks, which is exactly the kind of activity

Well, there you go again, carping on about the money and failing to
see the way it benefits all of us here in the Garrick Club drinking
some very fine wines that you couldn't possibly appreciate. The money
is only a fraction of what the country spends on bombing dusty
mountains in far off corners of the globe. If we didn't spend it on
these sort of activities it would only get spent on the poor anyway,
and you wouldn't expect them to tell the difference between a decent
Billecart-Salmon and a boring Bollinger, would you?

Sadly not. You may have missed the post when I sadly informed the
Staffroom that there will be no appearance at the rabit Oscar ceremony
this year. The film maker decided that the timing didn't work: I'm
leaving on May 12th and that was too early to get everyting in place.
(You know, rabit make-up team, luxury trailer, rumours of romantic
involvement with Sarkozy's wife, etc) So a rabit pilgrim is walking
from London. There are now problems with that, as I'm not being
allowed in the Victoria and Albert Museum wearing a rucsack, but I'll
get the Spanish ambassador to talk to them about that; he's the
president of a very portant exclusive club rabit belongs to.

Well, speaking as the best paid person who ever did a few laps of a
running track and then climbed the heights of Olympian pomposity, I
think the trouble with you people from oop north is you don't confine
your outlook to things oop there, and it's quite obvious you know
nothing about the workings of what happens down here as we never see
you in the Garrick Club showing off your money. And incidentally,
most of the problems experienced in the new terminal can be blamed on
the poor computer skills of the slack workers who drift down here from
the benighted north - places like Jarrow that we all know about -
looking for employment but are hard to train and couldn't do a decent
day's work to save their lives.

Gizzachance! I'm only just got the blogue peroperly set up. There is
a video link on it, in tribute to a well-loved old priest who served
the pilgrims for many years, and the soundtrack on that short clip is
lovely. I'm hoping to put Michael Nyman's sound track from 'The

I'm sorry, but I have to take exception to this kind of nonsense. My
researchers tell me you live in Wales and that is clearly why you
mention surge protection. Here in London we don't know anything about
surge protection as we have excellent infrastructure paid for by those
people who pay taxes. I don't pay taxes, of course, because I have
vast off-shore investments. I must make it perfectly clear that the
plans for overspend on the Olympics shouldn't be under-estimated:
surge protection is quite pointless here.

Once again, you defend the ignorance of these oop north johnnies, but
let me tell you they have no excuse for being ignorant because New
Labour has introduced all these wonderful academies as another way of
lining my pocket. As a Tory, I find that gratifying because they take
all the stick while we make the money. Anything else you wanted to be
informed about before I get back to my Veuve Cliquot?

That is clearly true. Look at what happened yesterday - they had a surge

built-in surge protection for luggage spikes.

Good question. Rabits already done the research on it. It weighs
much less than a full set of walking maps to walk across France. On
the other hand, I'm going down a route few people use, so it won't be
organised on the satnav programming. In the CSJ* office last week the
Secretary told me that only about six piligrims a year walk all the
way from England through France to Santiago. Some of the route is
waymarked, but the problem is finding food and even a boulangerie in
the countryside these days, as everyone drives to distant hypermarches
for everything these days.

Wot happens to little old peasants wot hasn't got a Citroen 2CV...?
