I want it all!!! I need all sorts of network monitoring software (but
on the cheap!) as there is none in my new school. Money is tight (this
is an understatement) but we need solutions. Can anyone give any
advice on free / or ridiculously cheap software that does any of the
following:
- block websites coming through proxy?
- block pupils accessing certain types of files (*.mp3, *.exe, etc)
- monitor pupil screens remotely and push messages to screen.
- desktop management tool for tickers, news feed.
- anything else?
- secret of eternal life?
- next weeks lottery numbers?

That's all.

Thanks...

There is soo many diferent tools on market, that you can find
everything from free open source tools to advanced and huge systems as
HP Openview. So there is a hard to tell which is really cheap. Example
of network monitoring tool

AB Control is a great piece of software for looking at pupils screen, send
messages etc. £75 per room dead cheap.

Ultra Network Sniffer ( http://www.gjpsoft.com/UltraNetSniffer/) is
only $30. But it has full function over monitoring network.

I'm probably wrong about this as well but you certainly used to need a
Windows license on the box using RDP to access a Windows machine (and if
you've got that then why not run Windows)

Definitely agree with Ethereal - a fascinating tool!
