"The writer Scott Alexander understands, calling it “child prison”.
School, he argues, “forces children to be confined in an uninhabitable
environment, restrained from moving… in a state of profound sleep
deprivation, under pain of imprisoning their parents if they refuse.”
Recently, the critic Lorna Finlayson wrote that “the real purpose and
priority of the school system was to instil the habit of obedience, of
deference to our superiors.” Finlayson left school at 13 and never
looked back."

extend the lockdown...it will improve the lives of millions
of the young
the young who need schools are the young with irresponsible
and otherwise ignorant 'carers'

I think our lad is doing better learning at home. He gets one-to-one
observation, and I'm probably far more motivated than they are to make
him pay attention.

one caring and intelligent parent is far better than
one overworked baby-sitter with 30 fobbed-off
children unloaded by their irresponsible owners

Oh dear, you appear to be entrenching inequality, what about the parents
whose parents don't help.

I always thought the point of school was to babysit the kids so that the
parents could go out to work. Book learning was just a side effect.

Our lad needs all the help he can get :-)

Yes, it often seemed like that at primary school. 'Big' school is
better. I'm actually enjoying it.

Even in an online lesson, it's hard to stop them messing about in the
chat. When I was young, you wouldn't dare speak out of turn for fear of
getting a piece of chalk thrown at you.
