Smoking Aga Problem

I have a oil fired Aga stove that emits oily smoke from the front hatch (to
the wick/burner) - it used to work without a problem. The smoke is not
instantly overwhelming, however, after a number of hours the kitchen becomes
unusable and the Aga has to be turned off. I don`t think it`s a blocked
chimney because the smoke seems to be mostly coming from the front hatch.
We`ve had one Aga engineer in and he couldn`t pin-point the problem - he
took some things apart/put them back together and for a while the smoke
disappeared. Eventually though (some months later) the wick needed to be
re-lighted (it went off for some unknown reason) and the smoke came back.

Does anyone recognise this problem, and how should I go about getting it
fixed ? Thanks in advance.

You do know that Agas need to be serviced every 6 months?

Our independent Aga engineer reckons once every 12 months - and as such
that's what he does.

This sounds like something he's talked about in the past - he's due again in
a few weeks - but in the meanwhile - perhaps go to your local(?) aga
retailer and ask who they recommend - then ask them out?

Just a thought.......not all aga engineers are the same as it were.

Cheers
Dan.

Oil ones every 6 months, gas every 12 months, solid fuel - cleaning of
interior flues monthly, chimney annually.

Try talking to Aga-Rayburn's technical department in Telford. They are
normally very helpful.

Yes, it`s been serviced regularly. It just seems rather strange that this
problem should crop up - maybe I`m wrong but I never thought Agas were that
complicated and so there wasn`t much that could go wrong with them.

Mine smokes a bit on first lighting, until the flow gets established.

Row things spring instantly to mind

(i) Bird in the flue? Or other blockage? Might be worth getting a sweep
in to push from that flue plate all the way up in case..

(ii) inadequate ventilation in the room. Does it do it with an open
window/door?
