IIRC "normal" basin waste size is 1&1/4"?
but what's the diameter of the actual hole in the ceramic to take such
a "normal" size waste?

(I've been offered a nice looking basin but told it takes a 1 3/4"
waste fitting ?? Hoping they;ve measured the "hole" and mis-
assumed...unless someone knows better?)

The usual waste sizes are 1.25", 1.5", 2", aka 32mm, 40mm, 50mm. The
sink holes are rather larger for each - just go to the plumbing shop
with the measurements.

The OD of 1 1/4" BSP is 1.65".

So if "They" have just measured the Hole and it is 1 3/4" then 1 1/4" will
fit.

It would be unusual for a basin to have anything bigger than a 1 1/4"
waste. However, to the best of my knowledge, a 1 1/4" waste will have a
1 1/4" BSP thread - whose OD is about 1.65" - and there's usually plenty
of clearance, so a 1.75" hole sounds about right.
