Another little problem I have ........

We are having the outside of the house painted and the painters stuck
masking tape on all windows sills of our news UPVC windows.
The work had to stop due to rain and now the tape seems to be "baked"
on the sills and it is extremely difficult to get the tape off and
restore the sills to their former condition. The tape was left on
for nearly three weeks ! We have used soap (fairy liquid) and hot
water, tried a bit of white spirit and even petrol.
Help please: what is the safest and best way to remove the tape and
glue and not damage the sills long term.

There's some stuff called Sticky Stuff Remover. Betterware do it, and I
have seen it elsewhere. May be able to get it on the net. I haven't failed
to remove anything with it yet, even the patch left behind after these
self-stick bathroom fittings on tiles.

In article <b6c2362f.03051...@posting.google.com>,

I warn you never to use the brown plastic parcel tape on PVC frames.
The sticky never comes off -- I think you would have to use a PVC
solvent.

Cellulose "thinners" from a car spares shop is quite good at dissolving
masking tape adhesive.

In work we use WD40 to remove all the stickers that come on new machinery,
let it soak so it desolves & breaks up the glue which you can then rub off
with a cloth.

Hi All
a very nice and patient man cleaned the sills with: a squirt of
Sticky Label Remover (£2.95) , a drop of Cream Cif, buckets of
boiling water and peeling with fingers and nails. There were 6 sills
- it took him nearly 3 days.
Thanks for all your good advice.

WD40, marvellous stuff, spray it on, leave for a minute and scrub off with a soft cloth and your finger nail, just done it myself

Someone else made that suggestion 13 years ago.

Fingernails are useful things for scraping stuff off, does anyone make
artificial ones?

I am not sure, obviously they do for ladies, but I believe guitarists use
something similar superglued on.

Yes, John Renbourn used to use bits of table tennis balls. I only
discovered that after he died, I always wondered how he got that
amazingly clean tone.

Try an ordinary, everyday rubber/eraser. It does the trick, even with brown parcel tape residue on UPVC doors :)
