The outside seems to be made of plastic, and the paint is flaking off.
I want to prepare the surface of the door, and then paint it. I do
not know how to prepare the surface.
I am currently reluctant to sand the surface - as I might scratch the
plastic badly (putting sanded "lines" in the door), I am loathed to
use chemical strippers as I don't want to dissolve the front door
completely (see next weeks message "Advice sought on removing
dissolved front door from storm drain!" )
There are pictures of the door and the current state of the door and
flaking at
http://www.geocities.com/nozza_wales/frontdor.html
I think the pictures on the site show the range of decorating
opportunities available for the enthusiast :-)
Advice on how to prepare the surface is sought, and whether I need to
undercoat the door, if so what should I use bearing in mind it is a
plastic door. What sort of paint do I use if I don't need to use
undercoat?
My current thoughts are....
1. Wash down front door with sugar soap using worn kitchen sponge
scourer.
2. Use something like Crown Once to paint over the remaining paint and
exposed plastic. The last house I lived at had a wooden door, and
Crown Once covered a multitude of faults and looked great.
3. Hope it doesn't rain for 12 hours (I'm in Wales)
For info, the brass letter box cover is removable and I will be taking
it off before decorating.
Advice, info and anecdotes welcome!
