We got a small jar of touch-up paint with our new range, so I guess it's
possible, you just have to find the right paint... But I don't think
that painting the cast iron hot-plate would be a good thing to do!
Have you contacted the factory? They were very helpful when I had an old
coal-fired Rayburn - they'll know what the best stuff to use, I guess.
(in our case they suggested a complete re-enamel at great expense,
but we ended up replacing it in the end)

For a re-enamelling route there is Twyford Cookers who might also take
an old part in exchange and reduce the cost that way.

Thanks Gordon. I did contact the local Rayburn shop who also suggested
a complete re-enamel. They avoided saying that it shouldn't be
painted, they just didn't want to commit to making any suggestions
about what to use. I did try to ask whether the Hammerite paint would
be the sort of thing to use and again they were vague and almost
evasive but did give the impression that it would be ok. I would have
though that someone else must have painted theirs and could advise.
oh well :o/
How about the paint that people use to paint car engines with? (or steam
engine boilers?) That'll stick to metal very well and withstand higher
temperatures... Might be worth looking into!
Google on engine paint gave:

and others..
Good luck!
