If it were me.
Plastering and strip paper
Assuming paint on walls - 1st coat where radiators will be - liberally.
Then heating/fire surround/gas fires out
Making good
Decorating
Carpets

You could swap carpets and decorating - but a good carpet fitter will
cause no damage anyway :)

Cheers

I can't see why you would do the plastering before ripping the fire surround
out. You want to do it after any major structural, electrical or plumbing
work that would benefit from being able to disturb the plaster with no side
effect. You can bury pipes in stud walls, for example. It is no harm to get
the CH system working and then, when happy, remove the radiators again for
final plastering and painting.

...but even the best decorator will splatter the carpets.

My, I must be an absolutely superlative decorator then, cos I put plastic
decorators sheets down on the carpet beforehand...

Point taken...I'll rephrase that.

No matter what you do, short or taking the carpets up, there is always a
danger that the carpets will get marked. It's best not to lay them until
the very end.

Same goes for floor sanding and varnishing - even though it causes a lot
of mess, floor sanding any earlier will not lessen the mess and it won't
hurt your painting job as long as the paint has been allowed to dry
before you sand.

Basically, if you have the option, floor coverings should always be done
last.

Re-plastering after it falls off when you take the paper off.... well
that's my house anyway. ;-)

Four weeks will pass in no time if you work full time !

I'd go for stripping out as much as possible and doing the dirtiest
jobs first, get some info on the central heating asap so your not
stuck with the one available installer who is not working because they
are shoddy etc.

Sounds like a sensible order. Since you are destroying the walls anyway,
you might want to consider rewiring (if the present wires are very old) or
adding lots of new sockets and/or light circuits.
