I have read several articles on painting clay pots, but have found none on
painting plastic ones. Can this be done? If so, what type of paint and
preparation are needed ? Thank you

ESP primer, sold for painting melamine, works well. Also works for
most plastic plumbing.
Clean them well first, especially freshly installed pipework (in case
of silicones around the joints).
