I have a Scantronic 9450 alarm system. Unfortunately the man that
fitted it has since left the country!!!

The alarm has taken on a life of it's own, setting itself when no-one
has done so manually. I understand that there's a battery fitted
inside the control panel. I've tried to take that out but just set
the 'tamper' alarm off.

How can I get the battery out to take it and get it replaced, without
the whole thing going off?

Many thanks

This is always the down side to saving money by having "private" jobs
done :-) But all is not lost. Where abouts in the country are you?
Did you want someone to look after the system for you?? Email me if
you do. Plug mode OFF!

Alarm systems can be funny beasts - but, the system setting itself has
probably not got a lot to do with the battery. From what you've
written, it sounds like you mean it's activating itself (setting off
all the sounders) for no reason (apparently), rather than actually
arming itself - the 9450 has no facility for auto-arm (it can rearm
after an activation, but intial arming must be done by putting in your
PIN.

It could be any part of the system which is causing your problem -
anything from a loose wire, to a defective SAB module in the bell
housing. Much oif this depends on the standard to which the job was
fitted in the first place.

If you want to get into the control panel, you have two options - this
first is to use the engineering code, which allows you to access
programming and also defeatsd all the anti-tamper circuits on the
system. The second, less useful way is to open the lid, put in your
PIN to stop the noise, do whatever you need to do, then shut the lid
and enter your PIN again. This will reset the system to whatever
fault level existed before - depending on the revision numbe rof the
PCB, the control unit may not let you reset the system without a
battery present.

Above explained, but give serious thought to having someone out (even
on a one off basis) to check the system for you, do whatever is
necessary, and leave you all working. Like I say, there are many
other things other than the battery which it could be - email me if
you want to go through some options....

Hi Bill

Just wanted to thank you for your help on the alarm problem. I've
done something (haven't a clue what) but it's working ok now. I did
clean the terminals up etc but that's all. Anyway, I've taken a note
of your details so that if I have the problem in future, I can contact
you for you or one of your colleagues to come out.

Many thanks again

No problem at all. Nice to hear it's all working. :-)

Just let me know if you do need any more help etc.

Bill Boyd, our resident expert alarm installer was probably still
with us back then.

I have a problem with the 9450 fitted, we have just moved into our new property. The alarm is fine and works, however I want to change some light fittings in the house and when I trip the fuse for the lights the alarm goes off. I enter the code to stop it but can't seem to stop the whole system.

What can I do to stop the alarm when the electrics is tripped ?

Replace the battery in the bell box (and maybe the one in the panel too?)

Having just had a power-cut here, the usual cacophony of alarms with
dead batteries has just stopped!

It will be the one in the panel that has gone wrong. If the alarm rings
out on a power cut then the independent one in the bell box must still
be OK. It is ringing because it doesn't see signals from its controller.

There will be an anti tamper on the main box too so you need to know
what order to take it apart and the right engineers code.

(at least that is how it works on mine)

Replace the standby battery which should power the system whem the power
fails. Possibly like this?
https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/TSB1.html and a lot cheaper than
alarm company will charge.
