Ravenheat Combi-boiler keeps going out

I have had a Ravenheat Combi-boiler for almost nine years, and it has been
serviced every year since in October. Just lately the pilot light has been
going out at least once a week over the last month or so. It seems to
happen sometimes after the shower has been used which is correctly connected
to the boiler.

Re-igniting the boiler seems to take more goes than the last time, usually
the flame stays on until the knob is released, then it extinguishes. I have
even turned the fan off after the flame initially lights but still it goes
out when the knob is released.

Can anybody advise me as to why it keeps on going out and why it is such a
pain to re-ignite?

Any help would be most welcome.

Thermocouple (aka flame failure device) burnt out?
Check out the Plumbing section of the FAQ for a description of how
it works. In general it is a probe which sits in the pilot light flame
(usually) connected to a copper pipe (about 5mm dia). The other end
is connected to the gas control valve - the one with the valve or
button you have to hold in when you light the thing.
If it looks eroded/burnt away then that's probably the problem.

Disconnect the device and take it to your local boiler spares dealer.
Fit new item - job done.

You seem to be experiencing identical problems to those I recently had
with my Baxi. In my case it proved to be simply *muck* which had found
it's way into the pilot, thus producing a weak yellowey pilot flame
instead of the necessary strong blue flame. What does your pilot flame
look like when you are able to light it?

The pilot is burning with a blue flame but every so often an orange glow
emanates around its perimeter.

Are you having more success if you try to light the
pilot after the whole boiler has cooled down?
I think the Ravenheat has an overheat stat which
interrupts the thermocouple circuit and thus its
possible to light the pilot but it will not hold in
until the unit has cooled down enough for the stat to
close (reset).
This suggests that your problem may actually be that
when the shower is running it doesn't draw off enough
heat to dissipiate that which the burner is producing.
Possible causes are restricted flow through the shower
head due to scale build-up, restricted heat transfer
within the DHW heat exchanger due to scaling, control
stat failure which may not reveal itself when running a
high rate of draw off.
AFAIR the Ravenheat isn't particularly sophisticated as
far as control of gas rate to match water draw off.

Oh dear - isn't this high current low voltage switching a recipe for
disaster? A few milliohms contact resistance and you're stuffed. ISTR
reading on here about problems with a gas fire which interrupted the
thermocouple circuit with a switch.

Hehe - sounds like my old Saunier Duval SD620F!
