What does "standby" mean on our mitsubishi aircon control panel?

We've battled with the aircon unit in our offices for years :-) Over time
we've worked out most of the cryptic instructions and even the black air of
which unit covers which area.

However, one thing we've never worked out is what does it mean when it says
"Standby" on the local control? We infer it means "sort of off" as the
aircon isn't run in that area.

But... it should have been. The room was freezing but no matter what we
could do, it steadfastly said standby.

Today though, standby has disappeared and the unit is working normally, as
it usually does.

We've got the engineers coming in but each time it appears to work for them.

Asking in DIY as in the past I've had some great advise from here.

Cheers, Rob.

If you are saying that you were asking the unit for heat (in inverter mode)
to warm the room, but it was steadfastly stuck in "standby" then more than
likely it was performing a defrost routine on the external condenser... When
outside temps are near freezing (roughly 3 - 0 C) i.e. damp, then they
regualrly need to defrost the accumulated ice off. Below freezing when the
air is dry, defrosting is not needed (or as often)

In article <NfCdnRyO1qZzg_3W...@posted.griffininternet>,

My guess is that in the cold weather someone turned it completely
off so the compressor heater has gone off too, and the compressor
has got very cold. In this case, it has to be heated for typically
24 hours before it's safe to use it. Otherwise, the refrigerant
may have condensed into the compressor oil (if that becomes the coldest
part of the system) and this has dire effects if the compressor starts
up in this state - the diluted oil is too thin and it ends up getting
pumped through the compressor, but it won't compress, and can also wax
up in the expansion jet, wrecking the system all around.
