This may seem a silly question but can I varnish walls?

I am decorating a living room with silk emulsion and having just done the
kitchen I can see little finger marks all over from the children. The paint
I am using is a chalky paint (name 1824 or similar, I forget now) so doesn't
wipe all too well, so wondered if I could matt varnish it in order for me to
simply wipe with a damp cloth.

Many thanks in advance
Simon

Cant see their being any problem with that BUT! some paints react to each
other so suggest you try a small out of the way area first and leave it for
24 Hours to see if the Paint and Varnish react.

Other than that make your Kids wear Gloves. (o;

Vinyl glaze is normally used for this. Where you'd find it is another issue.
J.W.Bollom used to do it if you have a branch locally.
Solvent varnishes, like polyurethane, will affect the colour, but a clear
water based should be okay.

Rather than varnish, why not go over it again with the correct paint?
You should use a Kitchens and bathrooms paint, or a vinyl silk finish which
is easily wiped clean.

Many thanks to you all. I may have a look around for some kitchen paint.
Your advice is appreciated.

a problem with the varnish thing would be trying to paint over it again.

Yes I hadn't thought of that. Not very good at DIY I'm afraid.
Will see how I get on with the kitchen paint.
Many thanks Simon
