Spent 30 minutes chatting to a nice bloke in India who spoke perfect English
and was very polite. Then he transferred me through to the Newcastle call
centre to complete the transaction - I could not understand what she
said:-).

You must have made that up! Nobody says "know" up here - it's "knaa" or

But if a white male made that joke it would probably be racist.

I'm almost tempted to phone National Rail Enquiries for times and
fares on the Venkatadri Express and see what happens.

A Pakistani friend of mine, who has made comment on similar matters in the
past, would point out that Shappi is Iranian, hence she is from an Indian
point of view a Westerner with more in common with Europe than India.
Therefore comments she makes about India would be seen as being as
offensive as if made by a white, male, comedian.

OTOH the same person thought that British racist jokes were very funny.
Either because they showed the "comedian" to be ignorant or highlighted how
clever the "paki" subject of the joke was.

But the joke wasn't about Indians, it was (if I must spell it out for you) about

So, it was (in effect) the truth. To suppress the truth on any grounds is
(in the context of this thread) itself racist/sexist/etc. as the suppression
is done only on those grounds. At the extreme end, akin to the police not
pursuing rapists of teenagers because the criminals happened to be brown and

Let's put it in a hypothetical context:

1) Everyone outsources call centres to Alabama, USA.

2) They employ cheap locals who work off a crap script, cannot deviate and
have thick accents and have zero local knowledge of the UK. Thus the whole
concept of outsourced call centres becomes a source of derision - like now.

Now run the joke as:

"I'm going to America on holiday next week & I wanted to know what the
weather was like. So I phoned my bank."

Is it racist? Is it (within the alternate universe as stated) as funny?

And if I must spell it out for you, and it seems I must, the point was
being made that Shappi Khorsandi can make this joke because of her
ethnicity whereas a white male could not.

My point is that the group likely to be offended (if at all) consider
Iranians to be white Westerners hence as offensive (if at all) as other
white Westerners.

That is, I was highlighting that the explanation was incorrect, not
claiming that the joke was racist.

I'm sorry that the fine distinction escaped you.

Its a legal definition in the UK.

It is illegal to discriminate based on a persons race, colour, etc.

Saying its OK for a black person to say nigger and its not OK for a
white person to say the same is racist *by definition* as you are
discriminating against one of them purely because of their colour/race.

To put it more simply for you..

if its OK for a person of one race/colour to say it must be OK for a
person of another race/colour to say.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is racist.

Oh look Dennis has cut the proof that he directed his comment at me and not
at the person who made the comment.

He has now gone on to accuse me (again) of making a racist comment while
also trying to divert attention away from his lies.

Standard Dennis behaviour.

He has the integrity of a 50p watch.

But it's what we ALL do. And anyone who says they do not is a liar or a
drugged up hippy.
