Has anyone repaired a drain cover, ie: replaced the full cover plus
surround. What type of cement type did you use ? My drain is on
the driveway and my past cover's cement surround had cracked split etc.
with the car going over it. Any ideas on the best material to use for
binding my drain surround to the driveway surface. All hints
appreciated.

You can bed a new concrete manhole cover on a 3:1 (3 parts
sand to 1 part OP cement) mortar mix. I don't understand what you mean
by 'binding' the drain to the surface - do you mean filling in around
the new cover? If so, it will be determined by what your existing
drive surface is constructed from. More info, please :~)

It's tarmac but the guy before has cemented round it; this has cracked off.
Surely concrete is tougher than cement, I want the eding surround for the
drain cover (660x450) to stay sunken into the drive, so I need a hardwearing
substance to do this. I want to know whether concrete is better than cement
.
Thanks in advance, Gareth Lane

This is the old cement/concrete bugbear. Concrete contains a
cement, the 'cement' I think you are referring to is 'sand and
cement', or mortar as it is known in the trade.

If it's a smallish repair, I would suggest using a granolithic
concrete - this is a fine grained, hardwearing concrete made by mixing
4 parts 'grano' chippings/dust (from builders merchants at less than
2quid per 50kg bag) with 1 part cement powder, and mixing with water
until a workable consistency is acheived. Place the mixed 'grano' into
the space around the MH cover and smooth with a trowel or float.
Alternatively, there are now 25kg bags of patching tarmac
available from BM's at around 4quid per bag. There will be full
instructions on the packaging, but the stuff is really only suitable
for patching small areas.

The DIY sheds also sell various special-purpose mortars. B&Q Warehouse
even sell one specifically for bedding manhole frames - but it's 11
quid-odd for 5kg

What is the 'edging surround' made of?

I suggest removing the tarmac for about a 6 inch width all round
and down to a depth of at least 4 inches. Then fill with concrete
and tamp well down.

# I want to know whether concrete is better than cement.

This doesn't really make sense, cement is one of the ingredients
for concrete. Cement is a white/grey powder. You mix cement with
sand to make mortar, or you mix cement with sand and gravel to make
concrete.
