I have lost in transit (moving house) the furniture screws that hold my
pine bed frame together. These are those long bolt things you then
screw into barrels pushed in the side using an allen key. They are very
popular with flat-pack-land and IKEA.

The problem is the manufacturer is unable to supply the retailer with
the screws anymore as they no longer make the same kind of bed using the
same size and length of screw.

Does anyone have any suggestions for replacements, I was toying with the
idea of gluing some plugs into the existing holes and then screwing it
up with normal large screws and cups. Any better ideas would be most
welcome.

Mark

I've wondered about this. The same type of fittings turn up in furniture
from many different suppliers, so are unlikely to be made by the
*furniture* manufacturer. But I've never seen them for sale. Most of this
furniture seems to come from Scandinavia. Who is *their* GKN?

Take one of the barrels down to B&Q etc and see if you can find a length of
steel studding (threaded rod) which is the right thread. This can then be
hacksawed to the right length and a nut used to secure the end where the
hex head was.

I presume the barrels are still in place? If so try different bolts until
you find one that fits, and that gives you the thread and diameter. Then
have a look at this: http://www.bikers1.demon.co.uk/ae_bolts.htm which is
relevant, or http://www.needforspeed.co.uk/fasten.htm both of which are for
automotive applications, but if they fit, who cares?

Have a look at the Lords-catalog. ISTR that they sell different
types/sizes of these bolts. They might have the size you're after, but
I recall that the packsizes were a bit large.

http://www.isaaclord.com

as usual, no connections...

P.S.: I just looked, they charge you for the catalog now, 2.50UKL,
but its an inspiring read ;-)

The bolts will be either M6 or 1/4 Whitworth thread. M6 is more usual
these days in which case you could try roofing bolts.

Woodfit (01257 266421 ) list this type of fastening - 6mm only - about
the same size as Ikea's.
They have three lengths of both screw and cross dowel as well as
studding and brass nuts to make special length bolts.
If you want any more info I can send you a copy of the relevant
catalogue pages.

You could also try Yellow Pages - Fixtures/Fittings/Fastenings. There are
all sorts of places that have access to supplies - either direct or through
Hafele.
I use Nu-Line in Ladbroke Grove
But another is Clerkenwell Screws

I know that I've got at least four of them in my "it'll come in handy one
day" box and you're welcome to have them gratis. Post some more details
here - bolt length, approx bolt diameter, diameter and depth of barrel,
quantity needed. Maybe mine will fit and maybe someone else can make up the
shortfall.

Thanks for the offer but I'm going to try the Roofing Bolt idea or the
rods. I think this is best as if your screws don't fit I'd feel bad
and I'd hate to deprive you of them. It's not an IKEA bed so they may
not fit exactly (i've already had two sets the wrong size from the
shop who thought they might fit the barrels)

Thanks
Mark

A few years ago I made a wooden bed from scratch and managed to find those fittings on-line. I have just googled 'bed fitting bolts'and it seems to have come up with what you are looking for.

IKEA have ( or had) ‘bins’ of the fittings in the casualty corner of their
stores which have a selection of the various fittings they use. I believe
they are free.

He will glad you came along - over 20 years without sleep must be
