I have a Galaxy S21 Ultra. Latest software updates. Bank with Barclays and
have the latest version of that App software too. Which seems to work just
fine - can do transfers and payments, etc.

And touch payment used to work - up until a couple of months ago. NFC is
on and the Barclay App selected.

If going to touch payment setup in the App I get 'Unfortunately you can't
make contactless payments with this device"

Which is obviously a lie since it did work until recently.

I've tried Barclays online chat and phoning them. Both seemed to be manned
by those without an answer and say they'll pass it on for advice and a
solution - but never do.

Any hints where to get an answer? I've tried an un install, deleting the
Barclays details, and starting over, with no success.

Android does prevent contactless payments on the phone
if it decides that the phone has been rooted.

Obviously the NFC capability may have failed.

Every frigging time the app gets updated, or you reboot the phonre, you
have to re-sign in to the Barclays app ... if you don't see their Eagle
icon in the status bar, you haven't done that and payments won't work.

Unless you've seen way too many Barclays notifications and have silenced
them?

Or discover that others have had the same problem with Barclays
and see their fix works fine.

I stored a Nationwide credit card in google wallet. To make a
contactless payment I just have to unlock the phone by entering the pin.
When making payments in Switzerland the amount was paid in SFr not GBP
and the app keeped a list of the payments. AIUI a Barclaycard is not
compatible with google wallet. :-(

Barclays specifically *don't* work with Google Wallet.

IME you need to have enabled contactless payment in the app recently -
if you leave it too many days before using it again it turns itself off.
(you also need NFC turned on in the phone settings). You normally need
to see the contactless icon on the status bar:

If its a contract phone then let them know its faulty and if you can get a
Pixel instead. Samsung are sort of not quite standard Android and often
things seem to go wrong in the software.
They make great tellies, but I'm not so sure about phones!

That's an interesting comment from Brian about Samsung 'phones. I have
always found their screens very insensitive and slow to respond, I find
Chinese makes like Xiaomi much more responsive.

But not a Pixel 6 Pro, mate of mine had his shit down
in nothing special air temps when recording videos
and even just talking on the phone. He managed to
monster Google into replacing it with a Pixel 7 Pro
and that doesnt have the problem.

Yeah, mate of mine has had to replace his much too often
imo and has to keep his calls short to get a decent time
between charges. Thats fucked imo.

And they're in the process of bringing in a "cashless society"! God
help us all.

Works fine for me. I only use cash at garage/car boot sales now
and that's not because cashless doesn't work there. I can pay to
any mobile number but it isnt worth holding up the queue of those
waiting to pay to convince the ignorant that its just as good as cash.

> God

Don't need any sky fairy, just use an operation that knows how to do
cashless payments.

First thing I tried. Open the app and go to card/contactless payments. Get
the setup page - and then the message I gave in my first post if I attempt
this.

Until you get complacent and try to buy petrol at night and remember the
app won't work for pay at pump

Tesco have just opened a brand new petrol station near here... Completely unmanned so pay-at-pump the only option. 'State of the art'. Doesn't even accept contactless payments...

I never take cards out with me any more; haven't done since just before the pandemic I think. Maybe I ought to hide one of the otherwise-unused cards in the car just in case.

Not offered at my usual filling station. Obviously if out and about and
needing fuel, I'd have my cards with me.
