Bought a tub of emulsion paint yesterday from the local DIY store and
went to get the bus home but was refused travel by the jobs-worth driver
because 'you're not allowed to get on a bus if you are carrying paint'.

I got off and boarded the next bus a minute later with no comment at
all from the driver.

I'm no spring chicken and have seen a LOT of summers so I certainly
don't fit the public image of a typical graffiti merchant - and anyway
it wasn't an aerosol spray can.

What did the first driver think I was going to do - redecorate the
bus?

The world's gone mad!

paint is dangerous stuff. An overheated can might explode.

I think you will find it is a fairly common part of the conditions of
carriage that anything that might cause damage or injury to persons or
property can be refused. Paragraph 12.5 of East Yorkshire Motor
Services' conditions lists as examples of prohibited items 'at the
driver's discretion' tins of paint, cans of fuel, cycles and unboxed
televisions.

When I were nobbut a yoof I used to race motorcycle sidecars .. and had
a first floor flat with electric underfloor heating. I also happened
to keep a racing Suzuki GSX1000 engine in my bathroom ... Which would
have been fine if the reason the engine wasn't in the outfit was a
cracked crankcase and subsequent oil leakage ...

Some council jobsworth had a mini-fit when he found out ... ;)

The smoke when the heating was turned on had to be beheld to understand
his point!

Yes. But not intentionally. There's a danger of the pot going flying and
losing its lid. Results are not something bus companies want to deal with.

Any unboxed television or specifically CRT? What about a computer
monitor? What about an LCD computer monitor. What, essentially, is the
difference between one of those and an iPad. I see lots of people with
iPads on the bus.

The conditions of carriage are as stated. It is up to the driver to
interpret what they mean or even to ignore the restriction, as it is
imposed entirely at the driver's discretion.

I still remember with mild bitterness the driver who wouldn't let me
take an unboxed microwave on the bus. (The driver of the next bus
didn't mind.)
And the driver who wanted to know what was in the plastic supermarket
bag (I said 'DIY stuff' which was true - it was paint, and I had no
intention of saying so and having to wait for another bus with a less
bloody-minded driver).
And the driver who said I couldn't take a very long thin strip of wood
edging on the bus, then looked upset when I snapped it in two to reduce
it to a quite reasonable length.

There was a time when several bus stops in Edinburgh had huge pools of
dried paint on the pavement. No need to guess why.

In the early days I went to a major exhibition in Montreux by car. At the
time, the Swiss only allowed the import of half a litre of spirits, I
didn't suffer, but many people had to pour away at the roadside half the
bottle they'd bought on the ferry.

In all fairness though it normally takes me a week to get the lid off
a can of paint. If I'd known it was so easy to open on a bus I'd have
tried that.

I have taken stepladders on a bus.

The company is probably worried about the effect on its bus if the paint
gets spilled. If it gets on the fabric of a seat, the seat will most
likely have to be replaced or re-upholstered. Even if it is just a job
of cleaning it from hard surfaces, the bus will be out of service for a
while when it is not scheduled to be.

Maybe the driver in question has seen the aftermath of a spilled pot of
paint.

Most council tips, erm recycling centres no longer let you bring old paint
in either, it apparently has to go to a licensed site. That is no doubt why
every clump of bushes has old empty paint tins in it.

One thing did annoy me about 6 months ago. The busses stop announcements
were not working. The driver said it was broken, has been for three weeks.
He told me that they see it as a low priority, whereas they are not allowed
to use the bus if the wheelchair ramp is broken. I said, so if all your
windows were painted black so nobody could see where they were, you could
still go out then? He did not get my point.

You can here (Kent), but they prefer that before bringing it in you leave the
lid off the can until the paint has gone solid.

The only announcement my local buses have is a ding sounding and a sign
saying 'bus stopping' lighting up. I have, however, seen somebody with a
white stick speak to the driver on entry and the driver then called out
their stop when we got there.

I was on the London underground many years ago when a man with a 5lt
tin of white paint, he was reading a book and when he noticed the tube
had stopped at his stop he jumped up, the handle of the paint broke and
dropped to the floor lid came off and the person sitting next to him
was covered with paint.

Our buses have what appears to be GPS, and both visual (LED display)
and vocal announcement of "what the next stop is".

If the vocal system stops working, some of the drivers revert to announcing
the stops themselves. This is usually the older drivers.
