David Peter Lang unexpectedly peacefully passed away yesterday.

He leaves behind his two daughters Rebecca and Nicola and grand
daughters Hayley and Beatrix.

Goodbye my friend.

Yes, he was helpful while he was here, I think the brexit posts put him
off, which is a bit odd as he was pro-UKIP sometime earlier.

He was not a friend to a council estate twat such as yourself.
Are you still trying to shag that very much used shag bag called Louise?
She tells me that you are a council estate peasant with a little dick and

Thank you Adam, I am sorry to hear that.

I will remember him fondly as someone who was happy to share his knowledge
unselfishly on subjects he had experience of.

His enquiries related to his handyman business were targeted at giving his
customers the best possible service and I admired that.

He mentioned his family with fondness on multiple occasions and I hope you
are able feed back to them that he was well thought of here. Having known
you here for some time, perhaps under a different skin, I think that is
something that you will do.

Very sad and unexpected...

He always gave generously of his time and posted much that generated
lots of interest and discussion. Even his foray into crime fiction
writing was a surprisingly good read for a first book!

The few times I spoke to him he always struck me as one of the good guys.

Must be especially hard on them having lost their mum not that long ago,
he always posted with such pride in his girls.

When Covid started and Terry Casey had just passed away I made
arrangements so that friends of mine that have no contact with my family
(or the newsgroup) could be notified.

A bit morbid but if I died tomorrow Lou would only have to make one
phone call or text and it would be sorted.

Sad to here, he was about on here a long time in the past, but probably went
to forums or local whatsapp later on. 70 should be no age these days. Its
the age I am and of corse I could wake up dead tomorrow, but I know a lot of
folk who are healthy at over 90 years old so one never can tell.

We were allowed to use the Internet at work. It had nothing to do with Mr Lang or anyone else what I did at work. He was just a trouble causer, like Judith and Nuxx Bar were. Sad for his poor family though.

I'm aware of that, I go further the hiding one icon, I hide the entire
message-pane toolbar. So I only have the main toolbar at the top, which
doesn't have the "smart reply" button, just "reply" and "reply-all".

Reply on the two toolbars behaves differently, and I was wondering if
they've some how altered how it behaves?

The truth is that Mason boasted that he was posting on usenet in his
employer's time and on his employer's equipment.

TMH and another poster or two pranked Mason by pretending to buy shares
in BP (the employer) and announcing their intention to travel to London
in order to raise the issue of Mason's antics at the company's AGM.

It was pure kiddology. No shares were bought and no-one went anywhere
near London, let alone the BP AGM.

But Mason made up a story about an employee of the firm having spoken to
TMH et al at the AGM (an impressive feat, considering they weren't
there). His own conscience was running riot.

From which toolbar? If I was getting rid of one from the 'bottom'

Fair enough.

I thought you meant that when you pressed the Reply button, Thunderbird
was either:

(a) simply trying to reply to a usenet message as an email to the PP, or

(b) trying to replay as an email to the PP AND as a usenet post.

It was trying to do (b)

As I said, I don't /think/ I clicked the wrong button, I would have
spotted this behaviour if TB had been doing it before because it
succeeds in the usenet post, and then hangs forever trying to send the
email from my usenet account.

Originally I only asked if anyone else had noticed a change in the
latest version.

I've used thunderbird since before it was called thunderbird, I've never
had this issue in all that time, it might be fat fingers, but to have it
occur twice in a few days after not doing it for 15+ years made me
suspicious, that's all.

I do remember hearing of people apologising for sending email replies
when they didn't intend to, I couldn't understand their explanation at
the time, but eventually realised it happened to them and never to me
because they were using the "other" reply button on the toolbar I had
deliberately hidden (for other reasons).

Oh certainly, I use it to totally hide the unwanted "lower" toolbar.

NO!

The reply button in the main toolbar always sends email replies to
emails, and always sends usenet replies to usenet posts. To me that's
perfect, no concept of having to press different types of reply for
different types of message.

Sounds like you use the icons in the lower toolbar? The day that thing
appeared I disabled it, due to it needlessly consuming screen area.

That's a good idea.

Oh.
You're right!
I didn't have the "Reply" button in the main toolbar and added it. This
message was sent by clicking that button.

That button to me is how a reply button /should/ work.

I shall have to put the mistaken emails down to mouse problems, but it's
never happened before.

Thanks.

I have passed the message on to Rebecca on behalf of everyone who has
posted here.

If I click the "Reply" button in the lower toolbar, the message has your
email address as the "To". The "Newsgroup" is optional.
In this particular reply, I have set it to uk.d-i-y

FWIW, I have always used the "Followup" in the lower toolbar for
newsgroups and "Reply" for emails.

I've never used the lower toolbar, but that is indeed how I understood
that it works, is there any advantage to it? I see only disadvantages.

Have to admit that I just use Thunderbird mainly as found. Only put the
"Reply" in the main toolbar when you mentioned it. I responded to your
post as others seemed to think you were doing something wrong.
As always with software, there is no right or wrong just different.

This seems to have become the Usenet "memorial drift" thread...

Condolences to those left behind.

I remember him as helpful and knowledgeable. Bought a portable workbench thing
on his recommendation, and don't regret it.

You can add another one to your list.

He'll be missed.

(And this is from someone who is married to a Kentish Maid)
