I see Aldi have a stud detector listed for a tenner tomorrow (Sunday).
Has anyone tried one of these for lath and plaster (which is typically
thicker than PB)?

I'm in the market for one and was just about to buy a Zircon E50, which
seems to be favoured here. If teh Aldi one were likely to perform well,
then it would save me 20-something quid for something I'll only use
rarely. On the other hand it could be a waste of a tenner and cause
some (more) profanity.....

L&P is nailed, so a basic metal detecting one should work.

I purchased one and it founds studs everywhere in a latch/plaster wall -
the results were random and non-repeatable..

I then purchased a Zircon and it found the studs in the correct place
(or more correctly it found each edge of the studs).

I haven't used the Zircon but have found the Lidl/Aldi offerings to be
pretty shit in terms of sensitivity and discrimination so I would say
pay the extra and save some heartache.

Seems a fair concensus then - rather as I suspected!

Thanks chaps

I've never used one that gave results reliable enough for me to stick a
drill in the wall without wincing
