I'm not familiar with Velux blinds so might be completely off base, but have
you thought about buying a blind from, say, IKEA and hacking it? For
example, if you cut the fabric to size and wound it onto the old roller you
could reuse the old hardware.
I recently installed 12 honeycomb blinds from IKEA ('Hoppvals') at a cost of
about £25 each, versus the BlindsDirectOnline247ToGo people who wanted £100
each. The blinds weren't the right length as they come in size increments
of 20cm, but I bought the next size up and cut them down with a hacksaw and
a bread knife for the fabric.
IKEA don't advertise them as cuttable, but turns out one end can be cut
without affecting the mechanism. I could cut them to a snug fit, which
previous made to measure roller blinds haven't been (you give them exact mm
dimensions of your window and they make them a few centimetres too small: so
big gaps around the sides). I could also cut out the aluminium header to
avoid other obstructions, which a made to measure wouldn't have done.
(I also had to find some alternative brackets, turns out 'roman blind' ones
fit)
What I did to begin with was buy a used blind from ebay for £10 so I could
experiment with hacking it around, before going all in on buying the full
set. The scrap blind was also useful for marking things out, rather than
risk dirtying the new ones.
