My chalet bungalow was built in 1983 and has 6 x Velux windows ref GGL 2.
They are in good condition but the blind material needs replacing.

Velux only offer the complete blind assembly, has anybody come across a
replacement blind material service, it seems incredibly wasteful to
replace the whole blind assembly.

Thanks.

It was a right bugger to get him back when he ran off.

We have similar, if not the same, windows*, and blinds. I had to replace
one - the fabric is was fine, the mechanism failed. * Numbers sound
familiar.

The newer one is a much better design and, as I recall, wasn’t hugely
expensive.

Not worth messing about with.

6 windows @ £110 is a fair chunk and seems wasteful - 6 old blinds to
dispose of. I have found some third party options at half that price but I
really only need the roller blind.

We got some blinds from https://newblinds.co.uk for our Velux windows
about 10 years ago. Although they don't appear to offer fabric only they
were much cheaper than official Velux ones and have served us well. They
might be worth considering.

Just had 2 replaced while getting the roof done - the newer ones certainly
appear to be more effective, but I'm not that impressed with the build
quality. We'll see in 20 years . . .

I just sold 2 on ebay for £15 each - sorry! Might worth saving a search though
- they will come up from time to time. The replacement windows were a couple
of cm too big. Annoying.

I bought 1 Velux blind, and one generic, about £40. The Velux is, again, not
the fit and finish of the old ones, but does the job. The generic is
altogether more flimsy, they don't completely 'black out' because of some
gaps, and the raise/lower mechanism is a bit of a knack (like a roller blind).
If money was tight, or I had a few to do like you, I'd definitely try a
generic on one of the less critical windows.

I'm not familiar with Velux blinds so might be completely off base, but have
you thought about buying a blind from, say, IKEA and hacking it? For
example, if you cut the fabric to size and wound it onto the old roller you
could reuse the old hardware.

I recently installed 12 honeycomb blinds from IKEA ('Hoppvals') at a cost of
about £25 each, versus the BlindsDirectOnline247ToGo people who wanted £100
each. The blinds weren't the right length as they come in size increments
of 20cm, but I bought the next size up and cut them down with a hacksaw and
a bread knife for the fabric.

IKEA don't advertise them as cuttable, but turns out one end can be cut
without affecting the mechanism. I could cut them to a snug fit, which
previous made to measure roller blinds haven't been (you give them exact mm
dimensions of your window and they make them a few centimetres too small: so
big gaps around the sides). I could also cut out the aluminium header to
avoid other obstructions, which a made to measure wouldn't have done.
(I also had to find some alternative brackets, turns out 'roman blind' ones
fit)

What I did to begin with was buy a used blind from ebay for £10 so I could
experiment with hacking it around, before going all in on buying the full
set. The scrap blind was also useful for marking things out, rather than
risk dirtying the new ones.

The best place to find replacement parts for Velux blinds is on the company's website or on eBay. The company sells these parts directly and also has a list of dealers that sell their products as well.
Can also try one of these replacement blinds, hopefully they have the materials needed and seem to be not super difficult to install
