After lots of web research and visits to Currys we are left with a
choice of two freestanding fridge freezers made by Hoover or Hotpoint.
Our requirements for size/volumes etc are specific and none of the
other manufacturers list a suitable model that we can actually find in
the flesh.
So - Hoover or Hotpoint?

In 1995 it was Hotpoint - because mine is still alive and working perfectly.

Trouble is brands and management change so that may not guarantee that they
are still any good.

One thing that made me choose it in the first place was that it had smooth
walls - the evaporator pipes where set into the metal lining so cleaning is
a breeze and de-icing is quicker as ones the ice gets a bit melty it shears
clean off the almost flat metalwork.

I hate ones with fins and "loose" pipes inside.

Possibly not much between them.
Both now of Italian parentage.
Pick the best deal.

I thought 90 percent of the guts of these were italian these days. The best
fridge freezer i ever had was an Hitachi. It went on for many a decade,
frost free and all.
I now have a Fridgemaster but its a lot noisier even though its smaller and
supoosedly more efficient.

They are all shite and most come off the same production line with different
badges.
Go for the cheapest. Do not go for frost free.

Whichever you choose, get one with the fridge on top. As you get older
bending down 20 times a day to look in, get stuff, return it to the
fridge, gets harder every day.

I wont use any fridge or freezer that isnt frost free anymore.

SO much less farting around.

Bullshit. They are very different physically so cant just be badges.

No thanks.

Only fools fart around defrosting fridges and freezers.

Makes sense to ensure that the freezer section on the
bottom has roll out bins if that's a problem for you.

When I was still using the two bar fridge sized freezers
under the main kitchen bench that just had shelves,
I just had a dirt cheap office chair on wheels that I got
at a garage/yard sale for $2 that I sat on to get at the
stuff at the back of the shelves.

Since replaced them with a fucking great vertical
frost free freezer with roll out out bins.

Separate fridge and freezer, both the biggest available
and both frost free so no defrosting ever again.

I don't care. I'm quite prepared to replace it
that often to avoid any defrosting ever again.

And I cant see why they should fail much more
often anyway tho I spose you can certainly say
that the fan that blows the cold air into the
fridge/freezer isnt there with the non frost free ones.

Shouldn't be hard to replace if that fan fails tho.

Might even see how much they cost now so that
I have a spare if it does fail if they arent expensive.

You're in the US ? We don't have kitchens the size of farmyard, that's
why we have to suffer fridge freezers. Many homes have kitchens like a
ships galley - one 3 foot wide walking space, with units either side.
Open the doors in the wrong order and you could be stuck in there all
day trying to sort out the rubics cube to get out.

Nope.

Mine isnt anything like the size of a farmyard.

Plenty use fridge freezers here. I prefer
a separate fridge and freezer myself.

That's basically what mine is.

Only if you have a problem with ear to ear dog shit.

That's quite similar to what I have, with the
separate fridge and freezer where the camera is.

We've had our Servis frost free fridge freezer for over 9 years without

Probably supports what others have said - Brand Name is of little
significance as the fridge could be made by almost anyone and then have a
badge of convenience stuck on. I wonder how many firms actually make the
compressors?

Buy on the features that you like and assume that most household appliances
are made to similar standards.

I repaired them for 4 years. Frost free were the nightmare.
Stat, timer, defrost heater, fan, were always going wrong.
But, that was 14 years ago.

Danfoss compressors were the best of the best. I transplanted a 32 year old
one into my Zanussi larder fridge. When I skipped the fridge it was still
working.
I think compressors are made in Turkey these days :(

Are you claiming a Miele fridge comes out of the same factory as a
WhiteKnight?

As to compressors - there seem to be quite a few manufacturers.
