We all know there were lots of good cartoons etc. about in the 80s,
but how about the rubbish ones, here's my selection in no particular
order.

1) Title Unknown
Some dross about a futuristic cowboy with a a robotic horse (maybe it
was called Northstar or something) - hated it, utterly pointless.

2) Dungeons & Dragons
Well, just one aspect of it really - Why didn't they just tie that
damned Unicorn up somewhere when the brattish one wasn't looking?
Everytime they could've got back he bloody moans about his irritating
'Uni'

3) Dogtanian
Interminable and terminally boring - file with 'Belle and Sebastian'

4) Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
Just too strange, plants with razor blades I seem to remember.

5) He-Man
Again, probably just bitter about one aspect - the preachy bit at the
end. Then again, I will condemn all its clones (Thundercats,
Visionaries et al.) as being rubbish.

Aaah, that's better, a good old fashioned bitter and twisted rant
always does one good.

The show about the guy with the robotic horse was called bravestar and was
really quite good, though not on the same planet as the thundercats or
He-man. All of the cartoons you've put down were the best cartoons of the
80's, which ones did you like??

Tony Mitchell

Ps:- I will agree with you about Dogtanian, that was utterly useless!!

Gonestar or Bravestar or some crap like that? I CALL UPON THE POWER OF TEN
BEARS!!! God it was awful.

"Uni" was the Jar Jar Binks of its day - something to keep the wee 'uns
interested while the older kids can concentrate on how seriously freaky the
dungeon master really is.

NOO! Dogtanian was the shiz-nitty! Catchy music :-P Acid-fuelled
storyboards. What more do you want?

I never watched it much, probably because it was crap. Thundercats was
slightly better.

Bravestarr, and it came out too late for me to be any more than slightly
interested in it. As I recall it wasn't all that bad though.

> 2) Dungeons & Dragons

D&D rocked! Although I hear what you're saying about Uni. Bobby (the
barbarian brat) was irritating as hell too.

> 3) Dogtanian
> Interminable and terminally boring - file with 'Belle and Sebastian'

I never "got" Dogtanian, so I'm with you on that one. Made no bloody sense
at all to me. Belle and Sebastian was equally incomprehensible, as were
the scores of other cartoons that came from France or Japan with incredibly
poorly dubbed voice tracks which the BBC attempted to fill the last kiddies
slot of the day with.

> 4) Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
> Just too strange, plants with razor blades I seem to remember.

I only vaguely remember this and, while it was undoubtedly surreal, for
some reason as a wee nipper I found it very easy to accept. I guess we just
don't care when we're that age.

Now this I have to disagree with. He-Man was the dog's twitcher! Quality
kiddie entertainment. I'd have him back in a second. I always loved the
preachy bit at the end too, mainly because it was so contrived. I seem to
remember one in particular where Ram-man cautioned kids not to run into
things with their heads. Sound advice there! Well done Ram-man! Saved me a
contusion or two, I can tell you!

Is that pronounced "Gone" with a long O sound, as in "Gonad"? If so it
sounds less like a cartoon than a dodgy German pr0n film. Not that I'd
know about that sort of thing. Ahem.

I used to hate Dogtanian when it first came on - the whole series seemed
to last for about three years. Then, when I was about 13 and they
repeated it, I got into it in a semi-ironic, "I shouldn't really be
watching this as it's just a kid's cartoon" kind of way. That talking
mouse thing got on my nerves though. Kind of spoilt the realism of it. I
mean, a load of talking dogs is one thing, but a talking mouse? I
suppose that's what you mean by acid-fuelled storyboards...

It was Dogtanian's voice that used to annoy me - sort of a high-pitched
whine IIRC.

Nah, there must've been some backwards schools somewhere that were unaware
of the essential spazziness (I hereby reserve all rights to the word
spazziness, by the way) of My Little Ponies (y's? How the hell do you

Think of "The Three Musketeers" set to cartoon animal land. I kind of
liked it but that was because I was into "The Three Musketeers" at
that time. I used to compare it to film versions to see how closely
they matched.

I heard it when I went on holiday, but that was it. I had the honour of
starting the spread around our school when I returned.

I loved the first series. It had great music.

Never saw the second one though

Willy Fog, god that was pants, so was Dr Snuggles (friend of the animal
world) Bleargh!!

While I'm at it Muren Buchstansinger on Channel 4 was just cracked, a big
nose thing living in a crack in the wall. What? I think it was on after
Will-Quack-Quack.

Superted was pretty poor too.

JIC you didn't see my original post, I included Willy Fog in my most hated
list. Whether it was the talking mouse, or the villain with the shining eye,
or the annoying theme tune (which was only slightly improved when "Broom
Cupboard Guy" talked over it) it was just poor. My all time fave cartoon was
Ox Tales, which was just laugh-out loud funny. I wish they would repeat that
one.

Mysterious Cities of Gold was
excellent, as was
that one with the
spaceship that left
earth.

Soap operas for kids. Excellent stuff.

A mouse and a gerbil solve international crime from their London
pillar box HQ, and you want believable plots? Hrm.
