Is Island or Iland?

I read somewhere American are remvoing "S" from Island and It would be like
"Iland". The reason seems to be that Island is a discriminating word and
it's an insult to people of Iceland and beside who pronounce I"s"land
anyway..

I dunno If they were kidding.

On the other hand, it would be possible to make a case for taking the
's' out of 'island' According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary,
'island' derives from the Old English 'iegland' so the 's' doesn't
really belong. It was borrowed from the word 'isle' which has a
completely different origin: the Latin 'insula'.
