Can anyone tell me whether the accents affected by Billy Burden and
Fleur Bennett on Grace and Favour are reasonably accurate West Country
accents (and from which county)? Or are they (or one or the other)
merely examples of Mummerset, with more caricature than reality about
them?

Feel free to reply off-group if you think this topic will not be of
general interest.

Many thanks,

Who are they and where can I hear them?

Grace and Favour was the sequel to Are You Being Served? Both shows air
frequently on public television in the US. I don't know if they are ever
re-run in the UK, but commercial tapes of AYBS are definitely available;
I'm not sure about G&F (which is called Are You Being Served? Again in
the US).

Billy Burden plays a pretty egregious caricature of a West Country
farmer (I don't think subtlety is the hallmark of any of Lloyd and
Croft's shows). Fleur Bennett plays his daughter.

Thanks,

Oh yes, I do recall turning that programme off on Saturday
afternoons when it was first aired. I pity anyone forced to
watch reruns.

I doubt very much whether the accents were anything more than
debased stage mummerset.

Try <http://www.wurzelmania.co.uk/> for a few snatches of song in
a real Summerzet accent. Warning this site could seriously
damage your sanity!

Beryl Reid did a good rural Gloucestershire accent when 'on' as
Sister George in the Killing of Sister George. She was born in
Herefordshire. Connie Chapman does a good 'Bristle' accent in
the TV plays of Peter Nicholls.

That's what I was afraid of.

Thanks so much; I really appreciate the guidance.

I only have the vaguest memory of this appalling series. However, my
impression is that the 'Mummerset' accents were 'caricature'.
