I'm writing this on a Toshiba A40 Satellite laptop, and was wondering if
anyone knew of some good Windows XP softtware around the years it came out.
Thanks!

Put SSD with IDE->SATA internal converter. And install Linux on it.
I have. It still works.

Linux, the OS that reaches the computers other OS's can't :)

Seriously; always great to hear about old kit being kept alive.

I've checked... I've got this one inside:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001345813850.html

And SSD drive on it. I think it is 256G or 512G...
It is slow, but works.
Yes, 32 bit linux but works.
All the fresh software. :)

True!

Just download debian live and try it on that machine.
I think I placed it on USB flash drive and booted from it.
Then installed it on the internal SSD.

than SATA 2 SSD:

And mSATA SSD on all that. It all fits inside IDE bay.
I think I bought this one:

Why "around the year it came out"? There's loads of software (both
freeware and payware) that's (still) available - although sometimes you
might have to use an old(er) version that runs on XP.

Alternatively, the A40 might be upgradable to W10 (although I still
personally prefer XP!). I have a Dell 1520 from early 2007 that was
originally XP, and I have progressively used it on W7, W8 and W10. It
has a pluggable hard drive, so it only takes a few seconds to swap
disks. It's presently on W10 using a solid state drive.

You will probably find that most programs released for more recent
32-bit versions of Windows will work fine under Windows XP. I'm running
32-bit Windows 10, and still have some software dating back to Windows
XP days (notably my Turnpike email/news application).

I seem to recall that Puppy Linux works well on older slower devices.
