Does the 3.5" MSDOS5.0 install set have a bootstrap loader that the XT BIOS
can read, or do I have to obtain a DOS5 set on 5.25" 360k's?

Thanks - that's vaguely how I remember it.

But I also vaguely remember someone complaining that they had to hang onto a
legacy 360k drive because of installation difficulties with the "latest" DOS
release.

The mixture of vague memories left me a bit confused.

I've been having an irrational urge to do something nostalgic!

Getting the old 5160 back in shape might be a bit of a challenge - maybe I
should get warmed up on an old AGP AT with a EISA slot.

If I was seriously contemplating down to the metal programming - PIC or AVR
would be a more profitable direction.
