Oxxford Clothes Inc., the Chicago-based manufacturer of expensive costumes hand sewn men, Chrys Fisher named president and chief executive, yesterday, less than a month after Mr. Fisher resigned as head of U.S. operations Hermes, the luxury Paris-based goods company known for its ties and scarves.Mr. Fisher, 47, replaces Jack McDonald, who is retiring. He said at the time of his resignation from Hermes late last month he was looking for a management position with an equity stake, which offered him Oxxford.
The new company’s chief said yesterday that Oxxford was not likely to lower the price of its costumes, which are sold at the door to more than $ 1,200, but would expand by selling products such as dress shirts and ties . He added that Oxxford would increasingly look abroad for new businesses in countries like Japan. The company will also open an office in Manhattan, Mr. Fisher said.Oxxford, which is privately held, declined to give sales figures. But Alan G. Millstein, a retail consultant in New York, said its sales had probably softened in recent years with the weak economy and the declining popularity of overt status symbols.
Mr. Millstein said it was likely that Mr. Fisher would introduce a line of shirts cheaper, even if it meant more than machine-made tailoring. Challenge Mr. Fisher becomes the brand expansion Oxxford without diluting its image by hand.
“Oxxford suits will be museum pieces unless the price levels more accessible,” Mr. Millstein said, adding that he expected the company to establish its own clothing stores and introduce more women. Distributors Oxxford include Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.Mr. Fisher is credited with protecting the value of the brand Hermes while the company expanded to new locations, increasingly sold to wholesalers, and began a direct-mail subsidiary.Before joining Hermes in 1984, he managed the Neiman Marcus store in Bal Harbour, Florida, and was also responsible for computer systems company.
