since the last Sonoma update I can't connect to my wonderful Canon MG5300
series multi-function printer. I can still print to it by printer-sharing from
an older machine on the network, but I can't find any way of using the
scanner.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hello Sara

Use your iPhone or iPad to photograph the item you wish to be 'scanned'.

Once you have the photograph, simply print it!

I have a Canon MG5350 - as you say, a wonderful machine!

Tried Gutenprint, at least for the printer side? I've been using my old
HP for about six years since Apple&HP dropped support for it.

No idea about scanner stuff, I bet there are pay-for packages that
support old scanners. But using Continuity Camera to 'scan' via an
iPhone photo is remarkably good, which is why I've not got a scanner any
more.

Cheers - Jaimie

Printer sharing is working for now, but certainly worth a remember for another
time.

You should be able to print to it via AirPrint, even if there aren't drivers
for this specific printer:
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchl3c1a7aef/mac

They may not support all the functions, but should work for simple printing.

For scanning, I'm not familiar with Sonoma or the state of the regular Canon
drivers to know what the issues are, but it appears VueScan supports the
MG5300:

https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_mg5300.html#technical-information

although you would have to confirm that Vuescan works on Sonoma.

Sara simply needs to photograph the item with her iPhone or iPad

Then simply 'print' said item as per usual.

Simples! :-)

I can print via printer sharing, so that's not currently the issue.

Oh - that's a blast from the past. I'd forgotten Vuescan, I'll have a look,

Bugger me! Costs the same as a new printer. However, strangely, after
installing the trial version and sucessfully using it, I found that the next
time I tried to install the printer, it was recognised as a multifunction,
installed properly and now works as it always used to.

Weird. Not poking it anymore in case it runs away and hides again.

Printers are the worst. And multifunctions are even worse than that.

Very much the best plan!
