Hi i'm getting really pissed off with my btinternet email. It used to
work fine on my iPhone 5 until it went and drowned in the canal. Ive
been resurrecting my iPhone 4, and the only thing is is that the
BTinternet email does not want to verify or setup for that matter with
all the correct details. Ive tried the details from key chain on my mac
which doesn't work.
So not sure what i'm doing wrong. Does anyone have a clue about this as
i've searched on BT's site and chatted with three advisers who insist i
have to change my password but its not my password that's the issue.
my email address works fine sending and receiving on my mac book pro
with Thunderbird as my email client so not sure whats happening. I think
its something to do with yahoo.

can i have some advice on fixing this issue? and getting my emails
working on my iPhone.

Thanks guys

You prompted me to have another look at my BTconnect account when using
it on my Android phone - I've never been able to send from it but the
pop incoming mail is OK.

Well I've fixed the smtp settings for smtp.outlook.com by changing the
security to STARTTLS (always) and it works now. Port setting is 587,
authentication is LOGIN with email address and password.

The settings that work for incoming mail for pop.outlook.com are
security - SSL/TLS (if available), authentication - PLAIN, port - 995,
and username is email address with password.

No idea if BTconnect Outlook is the same as BTinternet I'm afraid.

I've just set up my BT account on our iPad (running iOS7) and it works
perfectly with just putting in the pop and smtp Outlook settings
(pop.outlook.com and smtp.outlook.com) plus email address and password
- no need for port numbers or security.

As I'm a business customer I think I get the Outlook experience - I
think for BT Internet consumer you need to use:

mail.btinternet.com

as both the incoming (smtp) and outgoing servers - you can also set it
up as IMAP instead of POP.

The user name field is your email address - have you got that right?

I've just tried several times to setup my btinternet email account on my
iPhone 4S running IOS7 but it will only set it up as an IMAP account.
POP3 is not even an option during the setup process! This is a nuisance
as I have to remember not to delete any important emails on my iPhone
else I won't be able to download them to my MacBook.

Users of the Windows 8 built-in mail client suffer the same problem; the
only protocol available is IMAP.

On Windows 8 one could always download an alternative free email client,
or install the (paid for) Outlook product. I've no idea whether there
is an alternative email client for an iPhone.

Perhaps a different make of smartphone has one?

Go to Settings, Mail etc, add new account. Choose "other". Fill in the
details, but with an incorrect password. It'll fail, and then on the
next screen you can choose POP rather than the default IMAP and carry
on entering all the necessary stuff.

On iOS on the iPad at least the default seems to be POP as when I
entered correct...@btconnect.com and the correct password it
failed and went to an error message saying 'user name or password for
pop3.btconnect.com is incorrect'.

You can then enter the right POP settings - it tried to verify with
'pop3.btconnect.com' and 'smtp.btconnect.com' but in this case the
right settings are Outlook servers.

So it would work I presume if the servers were called
pop3.emaildomain.com and smtp.emaildomain.com.

You can also choose the IMAP tab as well of course.

Hm! I used an @btinternet.com email address when I tested to make sure
I was remembering right, and it went to IMAP - but I was just guessing
the address as I don't have a BT account.
