After an hour of copying (12Mb/s)my superduper stopped and reported that
it had 'failed to copy files' from my HD to the external.

| 02:55:00 PM | Error | SDCopy: Error copying
/Users/admin/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist_tmp_204_0.dat to
/Volumes/MyMacHB/Users/admin/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist_tmp_204_0.dat
of type 8 due to error 5: Input/output error

Anyone have any insight ?

Thanks guys,

Howard

It has come across a file that's sat on a burning piece of newspaper.
It's a seriously unimportant file though - you could just delete it
and go again.

If it continuous to fail, try Carbon Copy Cloner, try Disk Utility.

I had a failure a while back, and the support from the SuperDuper guys
is good, I'd recommend emailing them with the problem.

In my case it was a problem with Time Machine running at the same time.
The solution I had was to turn off TM, then run SuperDuper, which also
fixed the problem for subsquent backups.

I'm not saying it'll be that, but it's not always SD's fault.

+1 - this has happened to me with Superduper, but rarely. A more common
failure is backing up to an almost full volume where there is large new
file in the sequence.

I don't use SuperDuper (CCC and DU for me), but it might pick up where
it left off.

Heh! Not at the moment, unfortunately - but when it's not raining I'm
enjoying the freedom! Stuck indoors, I get my jollies from Usenet and
whatnot...

Just try again. It may just go away.
If it fails again and again delete the offending file
and try again.

If you have all data off it may be a good idea
to initialise the disk and put it all back.
You may want to check for bad blocks,
or disk malfunction,
What does the SMART status say?

It can be slow to backup a lot fo data from scratch but if you now set
it to backup only what's changed it can take minutes, depending on
what's changed.

Will do.. Thanks. Got the iMac back ... they cloned across and it seems
mostly good - see my post in the other thread.

So I have the backup that took 5 hours on an external HD.

Now I have my iMac back - they cloned across the disks ...

Now I set Superduper to only update the changed files (smart Update)
...... but it now says there are 900,000+ files evaluated and it looks
like a full 5 hours to do the changes.......

I don't understand this ... as the vast majority should not have changed
in a few days :(((

The clone will have updated every file's atime.

As a benchmark I've just run Backup - all files with smart update from
a 55GB SSD that is my main system volume to an external USB disk.
Results:

632,794 files evaluated
17,085 files copied
Effective copy speed 61.08 MB/s
Elapsed time: 14.14 (mins:secs)

It doesn't say how much data was copied though.

Looks like you're right :-(

I'll keep an eye and do it again at the weekend.

True ... except on this 5 year old iMac, it slows everything down and
makes it quite hard to use.

Is that facility in the Free Version ? or should I get the paid version
?

When I bought mine, it was needed for the smart update feature. Well
worth the money. I now have a mass of smart update schedules for all
kinds of stuff.

Ah - would have been helpful to know the OP hadn't bought it. Howard -
if you're still reading, I put SuperDuper as my number one paid-for
utility app - absolutely indispensable for making a bootable clone of a
main disk volume. It means you can always be pretty sure that if your
main disk goes down you can plug in the clone and boot (from any later
Mac) and lose nothing up to the last backup. The one to compare it with
is Carbon Copy Cloner, which does the same job.

Eastenders, Fred, Elliott and Jaimie.....

Oye .. I had a brain dead moment when I made that post .... I am sorry
to have wasted your time...

I DID buy the paid for version when I got the iMac back - intending to
use it as well as periodic TM backups.... I don't know why I completely
forgot :((

I DID use the paid for version when doing the 'Smart Update'.

It was this version that, when Smart Update' was selected, took 2+hrs.

I will be doing another Smart Update at the weekend and will see if it
takes a much shorter time.

THANKS for all the input guys - sorry about the error.
