I updated my Calibre de-DRM tools from Apprentice Alf this week and was
very disappointed that the download process dragged in some malware
along the way. Looking back at the download again I can see that the
advice is given to avoid the most obvious button but this is
disappointing stuff.

As far as I can tell the only problem has been that Firefox has been
adding adware to some sites. I hope that's it.

It's hosted on one of those crappy file sharing sites. Given that Alf
doesn't charge or even take tips (I suspect at least partially so he can
say he's never made any money from it if the legal hammer drops), he's
not exactly bound to pay his own money for file hosting. And as you say,

he also warns against a whole bunch of other possible things. Caveat
emptor, particularly when downloading slightly seedy copy-protection
removal tools.

Yes, I use them too.

The crapware that I was offered (macvexe) apparently installs as an
addon in whichever browser you used to get it, but not much else. You
should find out what you were infested by, and search up how to remove
it.

Or revert to your backup from the day before you downloaded it. That's
the safe course.

Read the discussion on the page carefully - it is possible to download
the correct zip file from the page without any malware or adware
wrappers.

It certainly helps to read the page with AdBlock and Ghostery set in
the browser.

I wish they'd put the files on something else though. I think one
problem is that "Alf" wants to stay anonymous for obvious reasons and
most file sharing sites won't allow that. If you can suggest a better
site for Alf, I'm sure he (or she) would appreciate a comment.

The Safe Mac has an adware removal tool. It is (or was, I've only used
his earlier version) an Applescript bundled as an application, and if
you prefer you can just download the Applescript.
