Yup, I tried that. What's odd is the moment you click the OK button it goes right back to photoshop. Usually it takes a few seconds for the editing to create the new layer. But it's instantly goes back to photoshop with no new layer, now output mask, and nothing was smoothed out.

Any help on how to erase portraiture effect from portions of an image in PS? I'm a beginner. I like to smooth the whole image but brush portraiture off certain areas...I thought I'd done it successfully before but it must've been dumb luck because I can't replicate it. Appreciate your help!

Hi Courtney. As c.p. is saying, we need to know we are understanding your question. I am not sure what you mean by 'portraiture effect' so if you paste a screen shot of the image with further explaination, I am sure we'll work it out.

so I apply imagenomic portraiture effect using a PS plugin and on this image I ran it super high it would be obvious if erasing it worked. Here is the screenshot showing the history. Essentially I need to be able to run it on its own layer so I can erase parts of it and I thought that's what I was doing but I'm messing it up somehow.

Does anyone know how to totally remove this from photoshop? I ran the uninstaller, and it still shows up in photoshop's plugin menu. I went to \users\appdata\roaming and deleted the whole remaining \imagenomic folder, and it still shows up in photoshop's menu.

Looking to add a plugin to photoshop cs4. Not sure which one to get. Does anyone have any expereince with one or the other? Potraiture seems to be the more popular one. Or maybe there is another one that can be recommended?

But you said you want to "fine tune" portraits with the plug-in, and that's the way to use them. There is no substitute for fine work to fix most skin problems. After the detail work is done, I find that Portraiture is often useful for fine tuning certain areas. So don't let the naysayers put you off. Like anything else in Photoshop, skin filters can be abused. But they can also be used intelligently, and when they are, they can be quite useful.

Mika,

Shine off for the Mac is written as 32-bit code. Photoshop CS5 for the Mac runs in 64-bit mode, so you cannot see the plug-in in the filter menu. You would have to right-click on photoshop.app and select the option to run it in 32-bit mode to be able to see the filter.

My last steps to this image were a little dodge and burn on the eyes, a visit to the warp tool to narrow the face, and I used the digital reflector filter in Color Efex to add some additional light and color to the face. I sharpened the final product with Sharpener Pro.

Yes, I have. I'll be posting the results in an article soon.

I still prefer portraiture, but for those getting started they may find some of the other things that Portrait Professional can do to be a welcome addition to their workflow.

A good analogy is that Portrait Professional is much like P mode on the camera - it helps to do a lot of things automatically, which is great when you get started. Once you know what you are doing you rarely go there and find other modes like Aperture Priority to be superior. Portraiture is part of a more advanced workflow like Aperture Priority on our cameras.

SNL's portraiture is done by Mary Ellen Matthews, and she's very good: www.jedroot.com/photogr/mem/matthews-portfolio.php

Definitely far from bad lighting. :P

But she employes a gigantic spectrum of post work. Lots of color split toning, cross processing, high contrast selected color saturation, muted colors, tritoning, zeroed levels, etc. etc.

Pretty much take a good portrait with good lighting (a lot of shots are 5-light setups with rim on both sides of the face, hairlights, bg light, and a fill dish or clamshell up front), and then get creative with the coloring. There's really no other secret to it.
