Hi want one for the wife, as she has just broke her Nokia.

I want it on a PAYG, and I also want it unlocked, so I can use it on
the Manx telecom network.

Whats going to be my best and safest bet to get this done.

I see that o2 have them for about 400 pounds, but its not clear if they
are unlocked.

They're network locked.

I know the 3G can be jailbroken and unlocked, not sure about the status
of the 3GS unlock, though.

Have a dig around here to see if it can be done, and if you'd be happy
doing it:

O2 have said they will unlock them (for a fee), now that they are
not the exclusive carrier.

Interesting.

Might look into having my 3G 'done' like that - although it's PAYG,
which may throw a spanner in the works.

Unlocked 3GS iPhones are available in other countries, or in the UK from

After expiry of contract, or after 12 months for the PAYG version. Not
all that useful for a new purchase.

However, jailbreaking and unlocking any iPhone is ridiculously easy at
this moment in time, using PwnageTool. See here for full info:

You can't carrier-unlock 3G and 3GS iPhones if you break them from
3.1.2 with blackra1n, though.

Really? The howto seems to suggest that it works.

Jailbreaking is no problem, still. Carrier unlocking is.

The baseband that comes with 3.1.2 is currently uncrackable for
carrier unlocking. The iPhone-dev site link above says

"if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock
3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach"

and iClarified says all sorts of worrying things at

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5527

none of which apply to your Touch, so you may have correctly discarded
them!

Blackra1n (stupid name) will carrier unlock a 3GS with the current
firmware. However it is not ideal as the resulting phone is very
unstable. At least mine was. Plus if you ever have to restart the phone
it falls into DFU mode and you have to tetther and go through the
unlocking process again. So all in all not an ideal solution and one
best left to die in the gutter.
Personally I'm hoping the dev team come up with something better and
more permanent soon.

Blackra1n does however successfully Jailbreak very quickly, although you
sometimes have to do it twice to make it work.
