AFAIK it won't do ClarisWorks 5 files, only AppleWorks 6, but AW6 files
do open just fine in Numbers.
AppleWorks 6 does run natively in OSX, although in Rosetta on an Intel,
but it runs OK here in 10.6.
If you only have a few files, I'm sure some helpful folk might do the
conversion for you :-)

No. Numbers cannot open ClarisWorks 5 spreadsheets directly.
It does open AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets, and generally preserves
formatting and calculations when importing them. There may be some
obscure function operators which don't work right, but Numbers should
flag them in a list of warnings when importing. There are also some
AppleWorks features missing from Numbers, such as forced page breaks and
"set print range", so they will be ignored.
I don't recall any issues with converting my reasonably simple
AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets to Numbers.
AppleWorks 6 can open ClarisWorks 5 (or AppleWorks 5) spreadsheets,
resave them as AppleWorks 6, and then Numbers can import them.
If you have some really old documents in ClarisWorks 4 or earlier
format, I forget offhand whether AppleWorks 6 can open them, but
ClarisWorks or AppleWorks 5 can.
I still have AppleWorks 5 installed on an old Mac (in Mac OS 9) and
AppleWorks 6 on my MacBook Pro, so I can import old documents.
AppleWorks 6.2.9 still works fine as a native Mac OS X PowerPC
application (via Rosetta) in Snow Leopard.

If you want to upgrade to Leopard, or to an Intel Mac, that option will
disappear unless you also keep a working PowerPC Mac.
Assuming you don't have it already, see if you can get hold of a second
hand copy of AppleWorks 6.
It was sold as a retail product as well as being bundled on "consumer"
Mac models (iBook, iMac, eMac) from about 2001 until about 2004.
Ideally you want the retail version, as the copy included on
model-specific CDs won't let you install it on a different model.

Gulp. On 25th January, It sounds like you're leaving things later than
even I'm comfortable with...
Does exporting the CW5 sheets to SYLK format help? Excel, at least can
import those, with formulas, but Numbers I don't know.

Doh!
Scratch that. I just checked with the two versions I've got available,
and neither CW4 nor AppleWorks 6 will save as SYLK. So presumably CW%
won't either.
I must be dreaming of Multiplan. Aaaah, Multiplan.

AppleWorks 6 can save as SYLK, IF you run it in Mac OS 9. It has a lot
more translators available than when running in Mac OS X.
AppleWorks 5 can also save as SYLK. (I've done it.) ClarisWorks 5 should
be identical.
Numbers doesn't appear to be able to sensibly import SYLK files (despite
taking ownership of that extension), but Excel can, as you noted.

Ah, that's a relief. I wasn't dreaming, then. In my haste I had only
tried CW4 (not CW5) under Classic, and AW6 under OSX.
But it still sounds as though Debbie will need to go via Excel to
Numbers.
Or via AppleWorks 6, if she can find a copy, which will also eliminate
almost all compatibility issues, and give her a way to access the old
spreadsheets in Mac OS X without having to convert them JUST yet.
I'm in the same boat, with lots of spreadsheets dating back to 1996
which were done in ClarisWorks 4 or AppleWorks 5. I rarely need to refer
to the pre-2001 spreadsheets, and I had AppleWorks 6 from that point.

Thank you Gareth and David for your very useful suggestions. ClarisWorks
5 can indeed 'save as' SYLK and Excel has successfully opened this
format with no loss of formatting. I don't have Numbers so will stick
with Excel for now, but at least it's opening in an OS X environment.
Gareth, yes I am leaving it late. As usual :-) But thanks to the online
tax return wizardry, the worst part is adding up all my expenses, which
takes a few hours at most. Completing the actual return is a breeze
compared to the old paper version. Should all be done and submitted by
this evening.

Thanks Andy - problem now solved by saving as SYLK and opening in Excel.
I'm sure the helpful people here would have a good laugh at my pathetic
tax spreadsheets if they did do the conversion for me. Fortunately not
now necessary :-)

Umm. Actually, CW4 *can* save as SYLK (IIRC). But you do need to have
the translators to hand.
AW 6 can save spreadsheets as Excel and CW4 and AW5 format.
I assume it can open at least some Excel spreadsheets - and CW4 and AW5
SS's.[1]
> I must be dreaming of Multiplan. Aaaah, Multiplan.
Nah, dreaming of an installation you no longer have.
Debbie: I am in an incapable state at the moment. I should not offer to
do anything for anyone. I am too unreliable.
But: I have CW4 (and CW 1) and AW 6 and a shedload of translators. An
old version or two of MacLinkPlus is included in that. Also MS Office
(not on this machine, but more than one version) and iWork '09.
If you are unable to solve this problem some other way, let me know.
If I should be able to dig out the old bits and set 'em up on the Mac
next to this one (which has a PPC and 10.4 and Classic), I would be able
provide the best translation you're likely to find.
I happen to know that I've got it all on HDD - not got all my floppies
read, but most of 'em. All praise be to FW800, that's all I'm saying.
Rowland.

Thanks Rowland - that is a very kind offer indeed.

No way :-)
Having just dealt with the dreadful mess otherwise known as the Inland
Revenue website, I will ignore my own misgivings about 'SS's' and bow to
Lynne Truss' superiority on that issue. :-)

Well, quite.

<crooked grin> vaguely. I didn't forget to mention my lack of
reliability, did I? (and other current complicators).

She's not superior, it's just that she's a convenient big gun firing in
well documented directions and if I happen to want some firepower in
that direction myself, I'll lean on Lynne. I'm sure she's sexier than
Eric Partridge (another big gun I use from time to time).

CW4 spreadsheet will save as SYLK (at least, it does on OS8.6).
The SYLK translator should be in a folder called "ClarisWorks 4.0
Folder" in the Appications folder (not in the Claris Works Folder
itself). Check to see if it's there on your system.

That's a relief.

I did mine about a week ago, and it took about 10 minutes online. But
(because I'm VAT-registered, and therefore compile expenses, by type,
every quarter) the adding up was already available as the sum of my
quarterly VAT returns.
My sole annoyance is that the Income Tax online return ends up giving me
a 'total to pay' which is just wrong - because it takes no account of
the two 'payments on account' that I've already made for that year. So I
end up having to do a manual subtraction of those. Should be more
simples, neh?
Good luck with yours!

Yes, this is the case with my OH, which speeds things up a lot.

I couldn't agree more! It gives you a horrible shock when you see the
humungous total on the screen, before you realise that you have already
paid most/all of it already. Definitely can do without that!

Doh, don't know why I didn't think of exporting (although I was

ISTR that CW 4.0 will happily use translators installed in the System
Folder:Claris folder.
