Cinema display - way too bright

Macbook running SL with 24 inch Apple cinema display in extended desktop mode.

We had a power cut yesterday and since the power resumed the cinema display is
way, way too bright. The buttons on the side of the unit no longer have any
effect and when I shut down the machine the cinema display shows a very bright
"black" screen - if that makes any sense.

Prior to shutting it down this time I tried to adjust the brightness using sys
prefs/displays and the brightness slider had no effect (although it works fine
on the MB display). Now, having rebooted there's no slider on the UI at all.

Any ideas - or does it need to go to the shop?

Thanks for any help.

In System Preferences > Displays, there's an Options tab with a
checkbox to disable the buttons.

(At least, there is here. But I'm not using a laptop.)

Thanks, but no such options tab here.

To turn it off I have to disconnect it from the power supply. It's off
to the shop with it.

Here's hoping it can be repaired.

PRAM reset?

I also plugged the display into different macs at home and it was the same
problem. Now here's the thing: the display has been to the shop and they tried
the display on four different macs and couldn't replicate the problems I've
been having at all. The display worked perfectly; the hardware brightness
buttons worked exactly as they ought and the display switched off when the mac
was shut down. So I took my macbook to the shop and tried it with that - the
display still worked perfectly. I'm feeling flummoxed. If I wasn't a fairly
regular customer of the shop I think I'd be feeling a little embarrassed too.
So on the one hand I'm happy to have the display working properly again but on
the other I'd like to know what the problem was, and if it was something that
I'd caused in some way.

(btw: in my original post I said it was the 24 inch display - that was a
mistake, it's the older style 23 inch) -- Nige Dantonemail: swop the obvious

Did the display continue to work perfectly when you got it home?

As part of your earlier testing did you unplug the display from mains power,
not just switch it off? Perhaps it remembers some settings until power has
been completely disconnected for a while ...?

Yes, I unplugged it from the supply and it was left like that overnight.

Nige probably suggested she should try on an elf's costume.

Have you tried leaving the display disconnected from the power for a
while?
